Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Site Engineering capacity which include reviewing technical drawings and schedules to ensure works are built to design, writing and reviewing RAMS documentation, writing and reviewing Inspection Test Plans/ Quality Documentation, managing subcontractor works on-site and on-site delivery, keeping accurate site diaries and records, carrying out material take offs.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my overall programme - support from my site team is good, and the training provider is generally good with capable and competent lecturers. It is a 6-year course with EPA with the Institution of Civil Engineers so at times can feel overwhelming.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Significant improvement in communication skills, technical skills, time management, and critical analysis. Understanding how to use and apply CAD Softwares on-site to check dimensions and to set out on-site.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Well Structured - Training is completed in a Block Release programme in Leeds so away from the site/office. There are several blocks through the semester including some self study blocks. Exams dates are given before hand to allow ample time to plan and prepare
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Most support is provided by the Training Provider. BAM has good internal system to book training courses to further studies. Additioanlly, many webinars and "catch up" sessions are organised with apprentice groups so current news/ queries are communicated on a regular basis. BAM has a good system with the SCE/DE programme to support apprentices EPA.
BAM does not provide much support over the actual learning but can step in if significant action needs to be undertaken about a particular issue.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Training Provider provide lots of supports for working towards qualification - Lecturers are generally helpful with the expectation of some. Course content is provided both on Microsoft Teams and also the College Learning System Moodle. Lecturers are also available on Teams if further support is needed.
Every block week, the Course organises half a day to go through the EPA process and portfolio development.
Where possible, the College provides past papers and exams details for apprentices to use for revision
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Generally, my qualifications do not impact my day-to-day role as the majority of information is theoretical/ technical. The qualification helps to understand/ grasp some technical concepts in my role but are not requisite to my performance.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
BAM has a "Future BAM" professional network which organises various site trips, opportunities, and networking events through the year for apprentices to get involved in i.e ski trips and three peaks challenges. These are good opportunities to see new things and meet new people.
