Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
Mortgage Administration involves a lot of background work for the entire mortgage process. This could involve creating a redemption statement for the customer, amending direct debit details, changing the mortgage product etc. We work with lots of different departments such as Lending, Mortgage Advice, Mortgage Support, Underwriting and Release of funds to ensure that the entire mortgage process is smooth for the customer from completion to redemption.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

3/5
My apprenticeship programme is good in terms of the work I do for Newcastle Building Society. I really enjoy the variety and gaining hands on experience in the workplace which is great for my CV. However, the work I do for the apprenticeship e.g. the assignments are quite repetitive as I've done a lot, if not all ,of the content at A - Level. I wasn't aware before getting the job that it was a Level 3.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
- Communication
- Time Management
- Adherence to Regulation
- Accuracy
- Teamwork
- IT and digital skills
- Adaptability
- Professionalism

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

3/5
My apprenticeship programme is pretty well structured. I receive lots of notice before each of my training sessions and also get feedback from every assignment I do. The only thing I would say is that I seem to wait a long time between new work being set from the apprenticeship provider. This is mainly due to me already knowing the content in the assignments and I have asked for the apprenticeship to be brought forward and the assignments to be set earlier but this was declined by the provider.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive excellent support from Newcastle Building Society. I was set up with a Mentor when I joined who has taken an active interest in my work and development. Also, the team I joined were happy with showing me how to complete certain procedures and carry out the tasks the job requires.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

4/5
I haven't really used too much of the support features from the provider due to me having enough from Newcastle Building Society however I am aware of the support networks the training provider offers.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

2/5
I asked my training provider what qualification I receive however I was given a very vague answer about receiving a "Nationally recognised certificate" which doesn't seem like a qualification. I don't think my job requires this certificate to complete the role as other people doing the same job as me don't have this.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Newcastle Building Society to a friend?

Yes

Why?

NBS is a very friendly place to work where everyone is very supportive of what you do. The people I have worked with have focused on my development and I have been given lots of opportunities to gain the most amount of experience possible whilst on this apprenticeship.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Newcastle Building Society?

- Ensure you get lots of detail about your apprenticeship before you accept the role - e.g. the level and type of apprenticeship, who the provider is, what does the Off the Job hours look like, what will my role be - any information you can find out about it before either applying or accepting
- Find out what qualification you will receive and what happens when you finish the apprenticeship
- NBS is very focused on community work and volunteering if this appeals to you
- There is currently a lot of change in the business trying to become more efficient and replace older systems which is really positive and forward thinking
- My Line Manager and Mentor have been very supportive of my development, helping me set objectives and pursue a high performance rating. However, there isn't the option to do a higher apprenticeship directly after you finish yours.
