Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
On a day‑to‑day basis, I assist qualified lawyers with a range of Childcare cases, including care proceedings, supervision orders, and pre‑proceedings work under the Public Law Outline. This involves drafting legal documents such as statements, court applications, orders and correspondence, as well as reviewing evidence including social work statements, assessments and reports. I regularly liaise with social workers, counsel, guardians, and other professionals to progress cases effectively and ensure key deadlines are met.
I also attend court hearings (both in person and remotely) where appropriate, take notes, and assist in preparing briefing notes and court bundles using electronic case management systems such as CaseLines. In addition, I manage my own allocated tasks and, under supervision, run less complex matters, ensuring that all work complies with relevant legislation, procedural rules and safeguarding responsibilities.
Alongside my practical role, I am completing a CILEX apprenticeship, which requires me to balance work with structured learning, studying substantive areas of law and demonstrating competence through on‑the‑job experience. This combination allows me to apply my learning directly to real cases, develop professionalism, and build confidence in a sensitive and high‑pressure area of law.
Overall, my role is varied and demanding, but highly rewarding, as it contributes to protecting children and supporting families while enabling me to progress towards qualification as a Chartered Legal Executive.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
Although the programme can be demanding, particularly alongside the pressures of court timetables and sensitive safeguarding work, I find this aspect motivating rather than discouraging. The structured nature of the programme supports my development, while the responsibility and exposure to real cases allows me to grow in confidence and capability as a trainee lawyer.
I also value the clear progression pathway that the CILEX programme offers. It allows me to develop professionally while earning, gaining recognised qualifications, and working towards becoming a Chartered Legal Executive. Overall, despite the challenges, I find the programme highly enjoyable and fulfilling, especially knowing that the work I do contributes to protecting children and supporting families during difficult circumstances.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I have developed strong practical legal skills, including drafting court documents, statements, and correspondence, as well as reviewing evidence and preparing court bundles using electronic case management systems. My ability to manage deadlines, prioritise tasks, and work efficiently under pressure has also improved, particularly when supporting cases with strict court timetables.
In addition, I have strengthened my communication and professional skills. Regularly liaising with social workers, barristers, guardians, and other legal professionals has improved my confidence, professionalism, and attention to detail. I have also developed greater resilience and emotional awareness, which is essential when dealing with complex and sensitive childcare matters.
The apprenticeship has also supported the development of transferable skills such as organisation, time management, and independent learning, as I balance full‑time work with structured study and assessments. Overall, the programme has played a significant role in my professional development and has helped prepare me for future progression within the legal profession.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?
However, there are occasions where aspects of the programme do not run as smoothly as planned. At times, communication around deadlines, assessments, or learning plans can be unclear, and balancing study requirements with the unpredictable demands of childcare proceedings can be challenging. Court timetables and urgent safeguarding matters sometimes make it difficult to follow the learning schedule precisely.
Despite these challenges, support is generally available from supervisors and the training provider when issues arise, and there is flexibility to adapt where necessary. While the programme would benefit from more consistent organisation and communication in certain areas, it still provides a solid structure that supports professional development and progression within a demanding area of law.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
In particular, I benefit from having a fantastic supervisor who is extremely supportive, approachable, and invested in my progression. I receive regular supervision, guidance, and constructive feedback, which has been invaluable in helping me develop my legal skills and confidence. My supervisor is always willing to take time to explain complex legal issues, review my work, and provide reassurance when dealing with challenging or sensitive cases.
There is also strong support in relation to the apprenticeship itself, including protected study time, flexibility around deadlines when work demands are high, and encouragement to engage fully with the CILEX learning requirements. I feel well supported both professionally and academically, which has made a significant difference to my experience on the programme and has enabled me to thrive in a demanding area of law.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
That said, the level of support can sometimes feel variable. Response times are not always as prompt as expected, and there can occasionally be a lack of clarity around deadlines, assessment requirements, or changes to learning plans. This can be challenging when balancing study alongside the demands of working in a busy Childcare legal team with strict court timetables.
Despite these issues, support is available when concerns are raised, and review meetings provide an opportunity to discuss progress and any difficulties. Overall, while the training provider offers a solid framework and the necessary resources to work towards qualification, greater consistency and clearer communication would enhance the experience, particularly for those working in demanding and unpredictable areas such as Childcare law.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
The qualification is most effective when the learning aligns closely with my practical experience. Being able to apply theoretical knowledge directly to live childcare cases helps reinforce learning and improves my ability to understand the wider legal context of the work, including decision‑making, risk, and safeguarding responsibilities. Over time, this has helped me become more efficient, organised, and proactive in my role.
However, some aspects of the qualification are more general and not always specific to Childcare law, which means that additional learning and support from my workplace is often needed to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Despite this, the qualification provides a strong foundation and enhances my overall legal capability, particularly when combined with the supervision and practical experience gained within a busy Childcare legal team.
Overall, the CILEX qualification supports my professional development and contributes positively to my effectiveness in the role, especially when learning can be directly applied to real‑world legal work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
From a professional perspective, there are also opportunities to engage in internal networking, training sessions, and development events, which support career progression and knowledge‑sharing. Within the legal service, collaboration with colleagues across different teams provides exposure to a broader range of work and experience, which is particularly beneficial when undertaking an apprenticeship.
While involvement may depend on workload and case demands—especially in a busy Childcare team—the organisation is generally supportive of staff participating where possible. Overall, there are meaningful opportunities to get involved beyond core legal duties, both socially and professionally, which contribute positively to the working environment.
