Car Engineering - Summer Placement Review

Day to day, I design and release components for manufacturing, pit equipment, and testing. I support other departments by resolving engineering issues, then model and release CAD solutions to enable their work.

Yes, I was given a significant amount of responsibility during my placement. I had a major role in the design process for the parts I worked on, from initial concept through to release. While all work was reviewed, I was trusted to independently develop solutions and manage the majority of the design and release process, which gave me real ownership over the components I delivered.

I’ve learned a number of new skills and strengthened existing ones. While I was already familiar with other CAD software, learning Siemens NX has been a major step forward. I’ve also developed my ability to design with manufacturing in mind, particularly within the unique production methods and high-performance standards of Formula 1. Working with critical components in this fast-paced environment has sharpened both my technical and professional skills.

I received a lot of support throughout my placement, from structured resources like training videos to hands-on guidance from other engineers. Whenever I got stuck, there was always someone willing to walk me through the process or explain how things work, which made it a great environment for learning and growth.

The atmosphere was one of professionalism and passion. Everyone takes pride in their work and shares a drive to create the best possible designs and release the highest-quality parts. There’s a strong culture of continuous improvement and a collective commitment to helping the team succeed at the highest level and win multiple F1 championships.

I absolutely loved every minute of my placement. The work was fascinating, and I felt like I was making a meaningful impact in helping the team. Being part of such a high-level engineering environment was an incredible experience.
