Systems Engineering(Data Processing) Industrial Placement Review

As a data processing engineer, my day to day is reliant on the formula 1 race weekends. During the season and in between the races, my role is mainly focused on troubleshooting, updating, and fixing bugs for the processing softwares. However, throughout the entire season, I am also able to develop new projects that are useful for our race weekend activity. This also involves required changes on the systems from one season to another. Overall, my department is extremely reliant on effective communication, as we deal with a variety of other departments in the team, such as Vehicle Dynamics and Aerodynamics teams.

In my position, I was given a huge amount of responsibility throughout the placement year. After acquiring the required skills, I was able to be the sole operator of the data processing system for 15 Formula 1 race weekends. I worked under immense pressure and often had to solve issues during live sessions with tight time constrains. Additionally, I was given the freedom to develop new systems which are used in the races by myself. I was first surprised by the amount of responsibility that I had, but looking back, I see how it has helped me develop my skillset in a faster and more remarkable way, helping me become the professional I am today.

During my placement year I have developed a huge amount of new professional skills and also improved my existing abilities brought to the job. My co-workers were extremely patient to help me adapt to the complex systems of a Formula 1 car, and also keen to see me improve and bring new ideas to the team. Additionally, I have had the freedom to share my thoughts and provide useful contributions to the development of our department. Also, when dealing with the other departments, all employees were happy to shar knowledge, which helped me develop a wide skillset. It has been a life changing experience not only professionally but also personally.

During my placement, I received a great deal of support and guidance. My team was incredibly patient, always willing to explain concepts—even if I didn’t grasp them the first time. They went out of their way to create resources that helped me build my skills. Additionally, whenever I interacted with other departments, people were consistently enthusiastic and happy to explain their work, which gave me a broader understanding of the company and its operations

he company culture was incredibly welcoming and fun. I often had casual conversations with colleagues, and people genuinely showed interest in my placement experience. The environment is relaxed, yet everyone is highly motivated to do their best and drive the team forward—reflected in recent team successes. The company values feedback and actively implements changes. It also organizes fun events, like a racing simulator championship, creating great opportunities to connect and give back to employees.

The past year working at Williams has been the best year of my life. I was able to achieve a lifelong dream of working in Formula 1 and it was even better than I could have expected. The people here are incredible and have made the work extremely enjoyable. I made great friends, while pushing the boundaries to develop myself as a professional and learn as much as I could. I will surely take this experience with me forever.
