Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Job role is an environmental consultant, assessing environmental impacts on large infrastructure projects and advising how these can be mitigated. Ensuring projects are complying with relevant environmental legislation, policies, and guidance. Coordinating environmental deliverables.
Day to Day Role involves writing environmental assessments, environmental coordination with technical teams, project meetings, desk-based environmental assessments. I also attend university one day a week.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
In general, I enjoy my apprenticeship and day-to-day role at Mott MacDonald. I have enjoyed managing the responsibilities I have been given and I have a very friendly and supportive team. A key contribution to my enjoyment has been working alongside other environmental apprentices within my team. My university experience has been fairly smooth, however I feel this could have been more enjoyable at times.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Skills gained in general environmental assessment and coordination, sustainability principles and EIA. I have also had the opportunity to develop more technical skills, such as Water Framework Directive (WFD) assessment and compliance. Skills developed throughout my apprenticeship include confidence, communication, time management, report writing, academic writing, and data analysis.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Somewhat organised and structured. I enjoy attending university one day a week, as this provides good structure to the week and allows me to fully focus on my studies. In terms of wider structure of the overall programme, I feel this could have been improved from the get go. I am approaching my end point assessment and it feels like my training provider are only just sorting themselves out and learning about the assessment requirements for us. I feel this could have been addressed in my earlier years at university.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I feel I have lots of support from my employer. I am provided with study days to concentrate on my university assignments and my team regularly monitor my apprenticeship progress. I have been given lots of opportunity to work on different projects to obtain knowledge, skills and behaviours relevant for my apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
We receive support from lecturers towards our studies and progress meetings in the form of 'tripartite reviews'. I do feel more support regarding the End Point Assessment could have been provided earlier on in the apprenticeship programme.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Relatively well, however I feel that my role at work is helping me more with my studies rather than the other way round!
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are lots of activities including sports day events, sports teams, Early Career Professional (ECP) network events, university/college outreach events and apprentice-focused forums.
