Industrial Placement Student Review

On a day-to-day basis, my work is quite varied and includes both technical engineering tasks and project coordination activities. A large part of my role involves supporting design work for wastewater treatment upgrades. In the mechanical team, this includes designing pumping systems, preparing technical deliverables like specifications.

Yes, initially I supported smaller tasks under close supervision, but gradually I became more involved in independently managing sections of project work and producing deliverables.

I have improved my communication skills when working in a multidisciplinary team and my technical knowledge in water treatment and design. I also became more confident in managing responsibilities independently and presenting technical information clearly.

I received a good level of support throughout my placement. I had regular meetings with my line manager to discuss my progress, receive feedback, and identify areas for development. Senior engineers and colleagues were also very approachable and willing to answer questions or review my work when needed.

The company culture was very supportive, collaborative and professional. The atmosphere in the office was friendly and approachable, which helped me feel included within the wider team and company.

I really enjoyed my placement overall. It gave me the opportunity to apply what I learnt at university to real engineering projects and gain exposure to the water industry. I also enjoyed working as part of a multidisciplinary team and seeing how different disciplines collaborate to solve engineering problems.
