Industrial Placement Student - Electrical Review

During my placement as an Industrial Placement Student: Electrical, my role involved supporting electrical engineers within the water consultancy division on a day‑to‑day basis. This included assisting with the preparation and review of technical documents and drawings, organising project information, and contributing to small tasks across multidisciplinary teams. My daily work also involved using internal systems, collaborating with team members, and developing an understanding of consultancy workflows and project deliverables.

I was gradually given increasing responsibility throughout the placement. While I initially focused on supporting and administrative tasks, over time I became more involved in technical work and project-related activities, allowing me to contribute more independently and build confidence in my engineering and professional skills.

I strengthened key professional skills such as communication, teamwork, and time management by working within a multidisciplinary consultancy environment. My confidence also improved over time as I became more familiar with tasks and took on increased responsibility.

Team members were approachable and willing to answer questions, which made it easier to learn and build confidence, especially in the early stages of the placement. I was given clear instructions for tasks, along with opportunities to ask questions and receive feedback, which supported my development and allowed me to gradually take on more responsibility over time.

It was very friendly and everyone was approachable, allowing me to ask all sorts or questions and queries without hesitating.

The placement was both challenging and rewarding, as it allowed me to develop my technical knowledge, professional skills, and confidence over time. Overall, it was a highly positive experience that has reinforced my interest in pursuing a career in electrical engineering within the consultancy sector.
