Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I worked within the Water Utilities Pipelines and Networks team, contributing to projects in the UK Thames region water infrastructure sector. On a day‑to‑day basis, my role involved supporting technical design and project delivery activities, including assisting with Project management and asset planning. I also worked closely with specialists, gaining exposure to multidisciplinary collaboration and consultancy workflow.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a good level of responsibility appropriate to my role as a placement student. I was trusted to manage tasks independently, while still receiving support and guidance from my team when needed. The balance gave me a strong understanding of expectations within a consultancy environment.

I have developed both new skills and strengthened existing ones. I gained exposure to project management and budgeting at a consultancy level, including understanding how programmes are planned, monitored, and cost‑controlled within live projects. I also became more familiar with standards, guidance, and regulatory frameworks within the water sector, which has helped build my technical and industry knowledge. In addition, I developed my engineering design skills through involvement in technical tasks, including the ability to interpret project requirements.
