Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

My role involves assisting with the delivery of system safety and assurance activities to ensure that infrastructure designs meet safety requirements and can be demonstrated as safe throughout the project lifecycle.
On a day-to-day basis, my work typically includes reviewing and developing safety documentation, checking that appropriate evidence and rationale are in place, and helping to ensure that hazards are being correctly identified and managed. I also support the coordination of multidisciplinary inputs by engaging with different design teams and stakeholders.
Overall, my role focuses on supporting the system safety process by combining technical review work with strong organisation and communication, helping to ensure that safety is effectively integrated into the design and delivery of projects.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a good level of responsibility throughout my placement. Over time, I became more independent in managing my own tasks, including reviewing/authoring documents and coordinating with different disciplines, rather than just supporting others.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, I’ve developed a range of both new and existing skills during my placement. I’ve improved my organisation and communication skills, particularly when working with different multidisciplinary teams on HS2.
Technically, I’ve developed my understanding of system safety processes, including reviewing requirements, working with hazard records, and authoring safety documentation. I’ve also built confidence contributing in meetings and workshops by becoming more comfortable speaking up, asking questions, and sharing my input.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a good level of support and guidance throughout my placement. Early on, I was supported through onboarding, training, and by shadowing more experienced team members to understand processes and expectations.
As I progressed, I continued to receive regular guidance through catch-ups such as weekly check ins with my line manager, where I could ask questions, get feedback, and discuss any challenges.
This support helped me gradually build confidence and independence, while still having experienced engineers available to provide direction when needed.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture was professional but also supportive and collaborative. There was a strong focus on teamwork, with people from different disciplines regularly working together and supporting each other.
I found that the systems safety team's atmosphere was always positive and open. There were weekly meetings set up that encouraged everyone to share updates, raise challenges, and contribute to discussions, which created a sense of involvement across the team.
Overall, it felt like a collaborative environment where people were approachable, willing to help, and focused on working together effectively.

I really enjoyed my placement overall. It was a valuable experience where I gained practical skills, worked on meaningful tasks, and felt part of the team, which made it both rewarding and engaging.

What advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald

I would advise others applying to Mott MacDonald to be proactive and make the most of the opportunities available at the company. Ask questions, get involved in meetings early on, and don’t be afraid to take on responsibility as you gain confidence. From my experience, the atmosphere is very collaborative and open, so asking lots of questions is encouraged and really helpful.
