Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I work in M&A on the Project Management team helping integrate companies to IBM. The day to day activities are focusing on integration tasks, as well as working on projects that I have been given, and being in contact with clients via slack for any issues and queries that I can help with.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, the first month or two was more focused on training and skills learning for the role I was to do and projects I'd work on were done with support from my Manager/team members. But after these 2 initial months, I was given more and more responsibility and trust to complete projects by myself. However, help was always there if I needed it.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
IBM has a platform called YourLearning, where you can go through digital credentials, courses, and other learning. This platform has hundreds of different skills you can focus on and improve. Throughout my placement I have scheduled time to enhance my skills and knowledge on areas such as Project Management, AI, Blockchains, Quantum, IBM cloud, amongst many others.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I had weekly calls with my manager to check in, even if it was just a conversation for 30 minutes. This helped to give me not only support if i needed on a project/task I was working on but also gave time to receive new ones. Additionaly, whenever I was given a project/task by my team, they would set out time to give me background and more info on what needed to be done.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
IBM has a fantastic work culture, I am not expected to work outside my working hours, and everyone is always happy to help or explain anything. IBM also has the foundation community built up with Future/placement/grad students for nights out, sports events, and other events to have fun outside of work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
No-one is expected to come into IBM with the perfect skillset. This is very unlikely. But they will teach you everything you need to know. What they want is an eagerness to learn. Just be yourself
