Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at IBM?

I have had a really positive experience at IBM and genuinely love both the company and my role. Working in Client Engineering as a Platform Engineer has given me the opportunity to take on a lot of responsibility early in my career, while being supported and mentored by experienced people around me. I particularly enjoy the variety of projects I get to work on and the opportunity to solve different client challenges using IBM technologies.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

As a Platform Engineer in Client Engineering, I work with clients to understand their technical challenges and help develop Proofs of Concept using relevant IBM technologies. I really enjoy the variety of the role, as every client has a different problem to solve and requires a different approach. I also enjoy being trusted with significant responsibility early on and having the opportunity to work across a broad range of technologies and projects.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

5/5
I feel that my role gives me a very strong opportunity to contribute meaningfully. I am trusted with real responsibility and encouraged to share my ideas and take ownership of my work. I also really value the mentorship within my team, as I always have someone experienced to support and guide me. I feel listened to, valued and trusted to make a genuine contribution.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

4/5
I feel that my overall compensation package provides a good range of benefits alongside my salary. The benefits I find most valuable are IBM Rewards, the Blue Points system, IBM discounts and the health insurance.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

5/5
My role is preparing me extremely well for my future career. I have developed significantly both technically and professionally, particularly in my ability to communicate confidently with clients and colleagues, take ownership of projects and solve technical problems. The level of responsibility I have been given early in my career has also helped me build confidence and become much more technically capable.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

5/5
I have had a lot of opportunities to develop both new and existing skills. In addition to learning through my day-to-day role and working on different client projects, I have access to a wide range of learning through Your Learning. There are also regular training sessions on different IBM products and technologies, which has allowed me to continuously build my technical knowledge and stay up to date.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

5/5
I receive a lot of support from my Foundation Manager, Task Manager, mentors and buddies. They are all incredibly supportive and genuinely lovely people. They make sure I am on the right path, have the guidance I need and feel comfortable asking questions whenever I need help. I also really appreciate that they check in on my workload and wellbeing, making sure I have the capacity to support projects without becoming overwhelmed.

How is your work-life balance?

5/5
I have a really good work-life balance at IBM. Even when a project requires me to work beyond my usual hours, there is flexibility to balance this with time off later. I also really value the hybrid working approach, as being able to work from home and come into the office two or three days a week gives me a good balance. Overall, I feel that my workload is well managed and that my wellbeing is genuinely considered.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

5/5
I really love the culture at IBM, particularly within my team. Everyone is very positive, welcoming and supportive, and I feel that there is a genuinely healthy team environment. I also really value how collaborative the culture is, with people being willing to help each other rather than there being a strong sense of internal competition or politics. The hybrid working environment also works really well for me and gives me a good balance between collaboration in the office and flexibility when working remotely.

How would you rate IBM initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

5/5
I would rate IBM very highly in this area. One of the things I value most is how diverse IBM is and how welcomed and included people are made to feel. There are a range of societies, communities and initiatives that provide opportunities to connect with people from different backgrounds and cultures. I think this contributes to a workplace where people can feel comfortable being themselves and where different perspectives are genuinely valued.

How would you rate IBM CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

5/5
I would rate IBM's CSR initiatives very highly. There are lots of opportunities to get involved in volunteering and giving back to the community, including initiatives supporting schools, charities and wider community projects. I really appreciate that these opportunities are accessible whether you are part of Foundation or working elsewhere within IBM. It is great to see IBM actively encouraging employees to contribute beyond their day-to-day role.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Absolutely. I would definitely recommend IBM to a friend based on my experience over the last two years. I have genuinely loved my time here and have made some of my closest friends through work. I have been fortunate to work in a very healthy and supportive environment with a lovely team, rewarding projects and a lot of opportunities to take on responsibility. The amount I have learnt technically and professionally has been incredible, and I genuinely feel that IBM has given me a great foundation for my career.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

5/5
The role has exceeded my expectations. Coming into IBM, I did not expect to enjoy the role as much as I have. The level of responsibility, variety of projects, technical learning and the people I have worked with have made the experience even better than I anticipated. I genuinely have very few complaints and have really enjoyed the opportunities the role has given me.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to IBM?

My biggest piece of advice would be to sign up to IBM's mailing lists and regularly look out for new opportunities, so you do not miss out on roles that may be a good fit for you. For the interview process, I would also encourage people to be themselves. I think being genuine and showing your personality, alongside demonstrating your skills and experience, is the best way to approach an IBM interview. You do not need to try to be someone you are not.
