Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I'm a placement intern in the Integration team at IBM Expert Labs, part of the Automation practice. I work with IBM middleware like API Connect, DataPower, MQ, App Connect and Event Streams, mostly on OpenShift. Day to day it varies a lot. Some days I'm on client projects, testing and building configurations. Other days I'm working on internal tools, demos, automation or AI enablement. There's a lot of building and testing things in lab environments, plus regular team calls and check-ins with my managers

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, a lot. I was on client work from early in the year and was trusted to own pieces of work myself. I also designed and ran a full-day AI training event for colleagues across different roles. You get as much responsibility as you're willing to take on

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, loads. On the technical side I learnt infrastructure automation with Ansible, Terraform and CI/CD pipelines, performance testing with JMeter, and data analysis in Python. I also got to know IBM's middleware products and OpenShift properly, which I'd barely touched before. On the soft skills side, I got much more confident presenting and running training, and explaining technical topics to people from non-technical roles

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

A lot. I had a task manager for day-to-day work and a foundation manager for wider development, and both were easy to talk to. We had regular check-ins, and I always felt comfortable asking questions. The wider team was helpful too, and people were happy to jump on a call when I got stuck

How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?

How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Friendly and relaxed. People are happy to help and share what they know, and you're treated as part of the team, not just an intern. It's a big company, so there's a lot going on, but the team itself feels small and approachable. There's also plenty of flexibility in how you manage your time

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

A lot. The variety kept it interesting, and no two weeks were the same. I got to work on real client projects, build my own demos and try things I'd never done before. There were challenging moments, especially early on when everything was new, but that's where I learnt the most.
