Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role as a resource management intern starts off with a daily catchup with my task manager. This includes talking about tasks for the day such as any security clearances that need kicking off, onboarding/offboarding resources, managing contractors timesheets and also sending over CV's to the different projects on WTC if there is demand. Throughout the week I have calls with the different projects to give updates, chase feedback and check demand. Another section of my job includes sending NPS surveys on behalf of the projects to the client
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I believe I have been given a high level of responsibility within my internship year. The level of responsibility increased with training alongside my confidence growing - this helped me feel ready to take on new challenges. I believe that the responsibilities I have learnt this year will benefit me both in my future career at IBM and in my personal life. Whilst at IBM, the opportunities for growth and development have been immense and if you have a particular interest, IBM will always let you explore that if possible

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I would say the main skill I have developed throughout the year at IBM so far is communication skills - without this I would not be able to fulfill my role efficiently. Another major skill that has developed is my confidence and inititive. Before IBM, I was quite doubtful of myself in anything I did but since joining it has taught me to believe in myself and push my self outside of my comfort zone. Finally, I have learnt leadership skills as I regularly lead resourcing calls in my managers absence

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was given great support throughout my time at IBM. When joining last summer, I had a four week handover period with the previous intern. This time included detailed demonstrations of carrying out my day to day tasks, handover documents that I have been able to keep for the entire year and someone there to ask questions to if I am unsure. Once she left, my foundation and task manager have always been there to support if needed.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture and atmosphere at IBM is fantastic. Throughout the year IBM hold several social events at each office to help us network outside of our close IBM team. This gives us a great opportunity to speak to partners, grads, apprentices etc and find more about their career progression at IBM and find out their tips for building a future at IBM. It is a very diverse culture which is great and is very inclusive.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I have extremely enjoyed my placement year at IBM and have learnt a lot about myself. I was aprehensive at first and wondered whether I would struggle with the adjustment from full time education to a full time job but within the first couple of weeks at IBM, I settled in straight away. My favourite thing about IBM is that I believe I haven't been treated as an 'intern' - we are all given great opportunities and treated no differently to grads and apprentices.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
I would advise people applying to IBM to just be yourself on the application. Don't try and lie about skills that you don't have as an internship is all about learning new skills and if you pretend to know something, it can lead to problems if you were quizzed on that knowledge. I would also say if you are successful, don't be scared to tell your manager if you aren't enjoying certain aspects of the role as they will always do their best to sit you in a role best suited
