Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The scheme lasted 4 days, and was an excellent insight into Rothschild's global advisory division. On a day-to-day basis, we were in the office from 9am-5pm, and we had talks given by a range of speakers from various departments about Rothschild's main departments and operations. We also had an investment banking 101 seminar lasting 3 hours, which was a very valuable learning experience. We also took part in 2 projects, one concerning creating an ESG - friendly business plan, and the other concerning a merger proposal. Overall it was a fantastic experience and very well organised.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
Very insightful. Despite being called the global advisory spring week, the talks were also held by other departments such as wealth management and Arrowpoint advisory. There was also lots of detail about the equity, debt, and M&A advisory departments of Global Advisory, which was very interesting. It was particularly helpful to have lots of time from Q & A after each session, as this allowed us to gain further insights into potential roles, as well as what Rothschild looks for in an applicant.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
New skills - I learned how to carry out basic financial modelling. This was not only through the investment banking 101 seminar, in which we learned about valuation models such as a DCF or comparables analysis, but also learned about the basics behind an LBO. I also had the chance to apply these new skills in my project, where we had to value a mining company.
Developed skills - presentation skills: I had the opportunity to present twice in front of the spring intern cohort, as well as in front of partners, which was a very valuable experience, as it helped boost my presenting confidence in front of large crowds.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Fantastic. Culture wise, we were shown the Rothschild archives which was fascinating, as we got to explore 200 years of the family's history. We were also given an office tour, where we saw that they have a gym, as well as an in house doctor, showing that they take care of their employees and have a great culture. We also shadowed some analysts and got to gain first hand experience of what working in a deal team is like, and the atmosphere was very positive amongst the team members.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
This was without a shadow of a doubt the most enjoyable and interesting professional experience I have had so far. It was professionally executed, and there was a very good balance between being talked to by professionals in their lectures, and doing own project work. I also appreciated the fact that we were allowed to stay in the offices past 5pm and work on our projects. The companies were really interestingly chosen, and the project was a fantastic way for us to gain an understanding of what working on a deal team could be like.

Would you recommend Rothschild & Co to a friend?
Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Rothschild & Co
- Do your research on the company, and ask lots of questions during the interview. It is one of the best ways to show that you are interested in working there. For example, if you find a specific deal Rothschild has worked on, research it and come up with further questions that you can ask during the interview.
- Practice for any tests, they get easier with repetition. There are numerical, verbal, and non verbal reasoning tests etc. for most banks, and these are tests you can easily prep for.
