Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
I would come into work to use the machines we have for pre tests. I would use the tonometer machine to check the pressures behind the eyes and the auto refractor to estimate the prescription of the customers eyes. Than I would use the optical coherence tomography machine to carry out OCT scans. This would do multiple scans of the eye without actually affecting the eye and thus would look for any diseases such as glaucoma, age macular degeneration or any diabetic retinopathy. I would also do some arrivals for customers who have sight tests or contact lense checks and I would also do some collections of customers who come in to pick up some glasses. Ive slowly learnt how to frame style for customers but im not ready to dispense yet I am hoping to start doing dispensing in the coming months.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I’m currently enjoying my Specsavers apprenticeship a lot as I am working with an amazing team who are showing me new skills I can use on the shop floor and out of the shop and in my day to day life.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I have learnt many different skills whilst being on my apprenticeship. One of these being becoming a lot more confident when talking to customers about our brand and what we have to offer here at Specsavers. Another thing I have increased is my knowledge about the brand itself and what we stand for and represent. Our core purpose here at Specsavers is to change lives through better sight and hearing. I’ve also learnt how to use machines to perform checks of the eyes I had never knew how to do before and these all help me complete jobs on the shop floor.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
My programme is very structured and well set up as I have 4 hours a week to do some independent study such as writing about journals and what I have been up to on a day to day basis.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive a lot of support from my employers and they are always here for me reminding me that if I am stuck and I ever need any help I am able to come to them and ask them any questions I am curious about. This also supports me and makes me feel more confident in the work place.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
I receive a lot of support from my training providers and coaches who help me work towards my qualifications. They are able to help me and give me tasks and goals I am able to work towards and complete and I am able to study NCFE English and maths as this will help me keep up with my training.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
I get more confidence which helps me perform more better and professionally on the shop floor as I am able to show off my improved skills I have learnt from my training providers and it helps me do a better job just generally.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Yes there are plenty of different events that Specsavers host. Some of these can be work parties but other times it can be members of stores linking together from all around the country to talk about their work and experiences and how we can help each other learn and grow together.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Specsavers to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Because it is a fun and interesting work environment where you meet all kinds of people and you can experience many different situations with customers and fellow work colleagues. It is a very professional position to work in and multiple customers trust you with their information and we are there to provide a great service for them. If you are interested in optometry or audiology this is definitely the job for you as you learn a lot about these two topics.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Specsavers?

Don’t be too stressed out about working in Specsavers because it is an amazing work environment where you meet new amazing people who will help you learn and grow within the work place.
