Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
As an optical assistant apprentice, my daily role centres on supporting the smooth operation of the practice while building practical skills in all aspects of patient care and service. Each day begins with preparing the reception and consulting areas, ensuring that frames are neatly displayed, testing equipment is clean and ready, and patient records are organised and accessible. I welcome every person who visits, greeting them warmly, registering new patients, updating personal and contact details, and confirming appointment times and requirements. I answer phone calls promptly, taking messages, answering basic queries about services, products and opening hours, and scheduling or adjusting appointments as needed.
Throughout the day, I assist patients as they browse and select frames, offering guidance on styles, fit and suitability for different lens types and prescriptions. I take accurate measurements including pupillary distances, segment heights and frame dimensions, ensuring every detail is recorded correctly to help the optometrist and dispensing optician prepare the right lenses. I also carry out preliminary vision tests such as visual acuity checks, colour vision screening and autorefractor readings, and explain each step clearly so patients feel comfortable and informed. I help patients understand their prescriptions, discuss lens options, coatings and prices, and process orders accurately while keeping all relevant paperwork and digital records fully up to date.
I support the dispensing process by assembling orders, checking that finished glasses match the prescription and specifications exactly, and fitting and adjusting frames for comfort and correct positioning. When patients collect their eyewear, I demonstrate how to use and care for their glasses or contact lenses, explain wearing schedules and aftercare instructions, and make any final adjustments needed. I also help maintain stock levels, restocking displays, carrying out regular stock checks and reporting low stock or damaged items to senior staff. At the end of each shift, I ensure the reception and testing areas are tidy and secure, pass on any important updates or patient concerns to the team, and use every opportunity to learn from qualified colleagues so I can grow in knowledge, confidence and responsibility throughout my apprenticeship.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I have enjoyed every part of my apprenticeship so far and rate it as excellent. I am learning so much about eye care, frame selection, measurements, and patient support, and I feel more confident in my role with each week that passes. The training is practical and relevant, and I feel well supported by everyone in the practice. I look forward to continuing to develop my skills and building a long-term career in this field.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I have learnt and developed a wide range of new skills throughout my apprenticeship. I have gained practical skills including taking accurate measurements such as pupillary distances and frame dimensions, carrying out preliminary vision tests, and helping patients select suitable eyewear. I have also improved my customer service and communication skills, learning how to explain procedures clearly and support people with different needs. My administrative skills have grown too, through managing appointments, updating records, and processing orders accurately. I feel my confidence and attention to detail have developed greatly alongside these technical abilities.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
My apprenticeship programme is very well organised and clearly structured. I have a clear plan of what I need to learn and achieve, with regular reviews and guidance to keep me on track. My training is balanced between practical hands-on experience in the practice and the knowledge I need to build, and I always know what is expected of me. The support I receive is consistent and reliable; my colleagues and training provider are easy to approach, and I receive timely feedback and direction throughout my apprenticeship. This strong structure helps me feel confident, focused, and able to make steady progress.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive excellent support from my employer throughout my apprenticeship. Everyone in the practice is welcoming and helpful, and I feel comfortable asking questions whenever I am unsure. Colleagues take time to explain tasks, demonstrate procedures, and give me constructive feedback to help me improve. I am given the chance to practise new skills while always having someone available to guide and assist me. This consistent encouragement makes me feel valued, confident, and well supported in my role.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
Training provider support
My training provider offers outstanding support as I work toward my qualifications. They provide clear learning materials, keep me informed about my progress, and are easy to contact whenever I need assistance. They explain topics thoroughly, answer my questions promptly, and offer helpful guidance on completing assignments and building the knowledge required for my role. The regular check-ins and feedback I receive keep me on track and ensure I feel supported at every stage of my learning.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
My qualification helps me perform significantly better in my optical assistant role. The knowledge I gain covers the theory behind the practical tasks I carry out every day, such as understanding how the eye works, different lens types, prescriptions, and health and safety standards. This means I do not just know how to do something, but also why it matters, which makes me more accurate, confident, and able to explain information clearly to patients. What I learn through my training provider connects directly to my daily work, and I can apply new knowledge immediately to improve the service I provide.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
At present, there are no formal extra-curricular activities such as social events, sports teams, or professional networking sessions available at my workplace. However, I still feel part of a supportive and friendly team, and I gain valuable professional interaction and experience through working closely with colleagues every day. I would be interested in getting involved in such activities if they become available in the future, as they would help me build wider connections and develop further as part of the profession.
