Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I am part of IBM's Futures (gap year) Internship Programme, where I complete rotations across different teams and disciplines within a large public sector account. These rotations provide exposure to areas including user experience design, business analysis, project delivery and service management.
Through these placements, I work with multidisciplinary teams, contribute to ongoing projects, engage with stakeholders and develop an understanding of how large-scale technology and transformation programmes are delivered. The programme gives me practical experience alongside professional development opportunities, helping me build skills in communication, problem-solving, collaboration and project delivery.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes. I was trusted with meaningful responsibilities rather than only observing. During my internship, I worked on real project deliverables, managed my own workload, and collaborated with experienced professionals across different teams. I contributed to activities such as UX design, business analysis and project support, presented work to stakeholders, gathered feedback, and was responsible for seeing tasks through from start to finish. The level of responsibility increased as I developed my skills and confidence throughout the placement.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes. I've developed both technical and professional skills throughout my internship. I've strengthened my communication and stakeholder engagement skills by working with multidisciplinary teams and presenting my work to others. I've also improved my organisation, time management and problem-solving skills by balancing multiple tasks and deadlines.
From a technical perspective, I've developed skills in UX design, user journey mapping, wireframing, accessibility considerations and business analysis. Through my rotations, I've also gained a broader understanding of project delivery, service management and how large-scale technology programmes operate. Overall, the experience has helped me become more confident working in a professional environment and taking ownership of my work.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a high level of support throughout my internship. I had regular check-ins with my manager and colleagues, who were always available to answer questions, provide feedback and help me develop my skills. I was given guidance when needed, but also encouraged to work independently and take ownership of tasks.
The balance between support and responsibility helped me build confidence while continuing to learn. I also benefited from mentoring, shadowing opportunities and working closely with experienced professionals across different teams, which gave me valuable insight into different roles and career paths.

The company culture was welcoming, supportive and collaborative. There were plenty of opportunities to network, share experiences and support one another throughout the programme.
Within my team, colleagues were approachable and always willing to offer guidance or answer questions. The atmosphere was professional but friendly, and there was a strong emphasis on learning, development and inclusion. Overall, I felt valued as a member of the team and was encouraged to contribute to meaningful work while continuing to develop my skills and confidence.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to IBM

Be yourself and show a genuine willingness to learn. You don't need to know everything before you start, but being curious, asking questions and taking opportunities to get involved will help you get the most out of the experience.
I'd also recommend making the most of the people around you. IBM has a large network of interns, apprentices and experienced professionals who are happy to share their knowledge and advice. Building relationships, attending networking events and getting involved in activities outside your immediate role can make a big difference to your development.
Finally, be open to trying new things. Some of the most valuable experiences during my internship came from working with teams and disciplines I hadn't considered before, which helped me develop new skills and gain a broader understanding of the business.
