Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

IBM Client Engineering is a hands‑on, collaborative, technical role where you work directly with clients to design, prototype, and validate solutions using IBM technologies. Interns are given real responsibility, often owning parts of prototypes, research, or client deliverables. Client Engineering is IBM’s rapid innovation and co‑creation function. The team works directly with clients to solve business problems using IBM technology—typically through short, focused engagements called MVPs (Minimum Viable Products).

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes—Client Engineering interns typically get substantial responsibility because the team operates like a startup inside IBM. Interns are treated as full team members.

During my time in IBM Client Engineering, I developed a wide range of both technical and soft skills. On the technical side, I strengthened my understanding of cloud technologies, rapid prototyping, AI/automation tools, and agile delivery practices. I also gained hands‑on experience with solution architecture, API integration, and data‑driven problem‑solving, which significantly expanded my confidence in building real client‑focused solutions.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a high level of support and guidance throughout my placement in IBM Client Engineering. From the beginning, I was paired with experienced engineers, designers, and architects who were always willing to help me understand the technical landscape, the delivery process, and the expectations of the role.
What stood out most was how approachable the team was. Whether I needed help with a technical challenge, clarity on client requirements, or feedback on my work, there was always someone ready to guide me. The environment encouraged asking questions, experimenting, and learning through doing, which made it much easier to grow quickly.
I also benefited from structured support, including regular check‑ins, agile ceremonies, and informal mentoring, all of which helped me stay aligned, build confidence, and understand how my work contributed to the wider client engagement.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

he culture within IBM Client Engineering felt genuinely collaborative, supportive, and energising. The atmosphere was fast‑paced but never overwhelming, because the team worked in a way that encouraged open communication, shared problem‑solving, and a strong sense of collective ownership.
What I appreciated most was how inclusive and welcoming the environment was. From day one, I felt like part of the team rather than “just an intern.” People were approachable, willing to help, and always open to new ideas. There was a strong emphasis on co‑creation, which meant everyone’s input—regardless of seniority—was valued.
The day‑to‑day atmosphere balanced professionalism with a relaxed, friendly tone. Agile ceremonies, team stand‑ups, and informal catch‑ups created a rhythm that made it easy to stay aligned and connected. There was also a clear culture of continuous learning, where curiosity was encouraged and mistakes were treated as part of the process rather than something to avoid.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I genuinely enjoyed my placement in IBM Client Engineering to a very high extent. The combination of meaningful work, a supportive team, and the chance to contribute to real client projects made the experience both exciting and rewarding. Every week felt different, and I appreciated how much variety there was—from technical deep dives to design thinking workshops to client showcases.
What made the experience especially enjoyable was the balance between challenge and support. I was pushed to grow, trusted with responsibility, and encouraged to bring my own ideas forward, but I never felt like I was on my own. The collaborative culture and the energy within the team made even the busiest days feel motivating.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to IBM

My biggest piece of advice is to be genuinely curious and show a real interest in solving problems. IBM values people who think creatively, ask good questions, and enjoy learning. You don’t need to know everything before you join—what matters most is your mindset and willingness to grow.
