Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a first year degree apprentice i was placed on one of the contracts on my multi user site. I will have spent roughly a year here before i move functions again in July2026. I spent my time rotating around the different functions on the contract, delivering real operational improvements through the form of projects. I look after a team of colleagues and ensure KPI's are met and deal with any issues that are appropriate for my level of experience. Personally i have spent a lot of time with Continuous Improvement, looking at how we can achieve operational excellence and increase efficiency.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have absolutely loved my time on the course so far, it has been an extremely welcoming and enjoyable experience. I have been given a level of autonomy and responsibility that has allowed me to stretch myself, and if this ever becomes overwhelming then the support available to me is extremely well signposted.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I came onto this course with no background knowledge or experience in regards to the world of logistics or supply chain management. In such a short amount of time i have been exposed to so many different functions and operating methods that i have had the chance to then go on to utilise myself. We attend university at Sheffield Hallam every 5-6 weeks and i feel as though i can genuinely return to my workplace and apply the knowledge i have been taught into my day to day and see it happening in the real world.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
We received all of our university dates in advance. There could have been more preparation done on the actual contracts we were placed on but this is the only real drawback. We spent the first two weeks learning about all of the contracts on site and how all of the supporting roles work together to assist with the operation on site. We have been given plenty of notice for our next rotation allowing us to establish a development plan for our future on site.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
There is an unbelievable amount of support on site. The first two weeks really set the tone for how much support is available should we need it. We were assigned mentors that would assist us with any workplace queries/needs and as time has gone on i have relied on my mentor more and more. My personal mentor is an ex apprentice himself so has lived the experiences i am currently going through myself. HR and our Training manager have been particularly helpful and supportive when i have asked for it. SHU also assign us a coach that handles any issues that fall into the gap between SHU and GXO. SHU issues are sorted with the lecturers delivering the modules.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
As stated, we receive a lot of support from SHU having a coach and also from the lecturers. GXO have been very good at allowing me to take the time that i need when completing my off the job training hours and when completing work towards my university assignments. We must hit an average of 6 hours of OTJT and this has been an absolute breeze because of the strong communication and trust i haven between myself and the management on the contract i am currently working on.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
As stated, i really do feel as though i can apply the things that i learn at uni into my day to day role. It is delivered in a way that we can clearly understand. SHU seem to have grasped the operation of GXO well and as we are a purely GXO cohort, it is all delivered in a format that is relevant to us.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
I recently had the opportunity to host an apprentice networking event at my site where 12 other GXO apprentices and apprentice ambassador joined me at Ollerton to gain an insight into my day to day duties but also to establish a stronger apprentice network.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend GXO Logistics to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The course allows me to stretch myself and grow at a rate that i didnt think was possible. You have real responsibility and autonomy and can genuinely make an impact even within your first year. GXO really understand the value thta apprentices bring with a fresh set of eyes and no preconceptions of how we should operate. The support is immense and i was welcomed so well.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GXO Logistics?
tailor your CV to the specific role and never see a cover letter as optional, if it is an option do it. Be confident and do some at least surface level research into the world of logistics and GXO. Specifically i would look at understanding the 5 GXO values and how you feel they apply to you.
