3.4/5 - Structure and Support

Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
I enjoy designing new applications for internal and external clients. I work from the requirements and liaise with the client to ensure that it meets their requests.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

3/5
I generally enjoy the job and attending university, although there is not much scope for specialising in what you want to do or trying something new.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
I have learned UX design skills such as Figma, and my company funded my completion of the Google UX Design certificate. I have also learned consulting skills through various bootcamps.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

3/5
My course is too general and the university course content is very repetitive. IBM Consulting also functions as an internal job marketplace and so it is difficult to find roles that you are interested in unless you have the relevant network contacts. However, this is also a positive as you get to try lots of new roles and experience working on different accounts.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

4/5
My managers are extremely supportive with any concerns I may have.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

3/5
The lecturers are generally happy to provide support during their office hours. However, there is very limited assignment support regarding assignment exemplars and how to go about completing them.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

3/5
I feel that it helps me to understand abstract concepts within consulting but is not completely relevant within the actual job, especially as a designer.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

4/5
There are lots of events within the office that you can take part in, and communities that you can join on Slack.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Because it gives you a chance to grow and develop your skillset within a supportive environment.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?

Communication and teamwork are more important than your technical skillset, although both are signficant.
