Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
In my role as a software tester, I focus primarily on performance testing, but I also have opportunities to support other types of testing when required. On a day‑to‑day basis, I work to make sure the software for my client is stable, efficient, and able to handle the expected load.
I review requirements or user stories so I understand what the system is supposed to do and what performance expectations exist. I then help to implement and run test scenarios to evaluate how my client's system behaves under different conditions.
As a tester, my role is about ensuring the system performs reliably under the conditions it will experience in the real world while also contributing to the broader testing efforts of the team.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I enjoy my apprenticeship because it gives me the chance to learn while also doing real, meaningful work. I’m able to build my skills, gain hands‑on experience, and apply what I’m learning to actual projects. I like that I’m not just observing — I’m contributing to work that has a real impact, and that makes the learning experience more rewarding and motivating.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I’ve developed a lot of new skills during my apprenticeship, especially in terms of confidence and technical ability. I came into this role from a background that wasn’t very technical, so at first it felt like a big step. But the environment, support, and hands‑on experience I’ve had throughout the apprenticeship have helped me grow quickly. I’ve learned to trust my abilities, ask questions, take on challenges, and build the technical skills I need to succeed. I have learnt a lot about software development and how to use different testing software. This has given me much more confidence in my work and in my future career.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
My apprenticeship programme at IBM is really well organised and structured. I spend four days each week working on the job and one day dedicated to learning, which gives me a good balance between practical experience and formal training. On top of that, there are courses and certifications available for me to work toward, which helps me build my skills and progress at a steady pace. The structure makes it easy for me to learn, apply what I’ve learned, and continue developing professionally.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive a lot of support from my employer throughout my apprenticeship. They’re very understanding and helpful when I need to adjust my apprenticeship schedule to meet client work commitments, and they always make sure I can balance both learning and project work effectively. They also encourage me to pursue additional certifications, such as AWS and AI‑related credentials, to help me grow in my career. Knowing that they’re invested in my development makes a big difference and motivates me to keep improving.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
I receive a great deal of support from my training provider while working toward my qualifications. In addition to providing lessons on the courses that are assigned, they are always available to schedule a meeting whenever I have learning questions or concerns about my courses, and they help me stay on track so I can meet my deadlines on time. They also have a campus I can use if I ever need a dedicated learning environment, which gives me even more flexibility and support.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
My qualification through my training provider really helps me perform better in my role as a software tester. I’m working toward a digital technology degree, and a lot of what I learn directly supports the work I do day to day. The course content helps me understand technical concepts more clearly, which makes it easier for me to analyse problems, interpret test results, and communicate effectively with developers and other team members. The knowledge I gain from my qualification gives me a stronger foundation and helps me approach my role with more confidence and a deeper technical understanding.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
There are plenty of extra‑curricular activities I can get involved in at work, which makes the overall experience even more enjoyable. There are social events where I can get to know colleagues outside of my day‑to‑day tasks, and there are often opportunities to join in with things like sports teams or group activities. There are also professional networking events that help me build connections across the company and learn from people in different roles and departments. Having these options available makes the workplace feel more engaging and helps me feel like part of the wider community.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I would definitely recommend IBM to a friend because the overall experience has been so positive and supportive. The apprenticeship is well structured, with a clear balance between on‑the‑job learning and dedicated study time, and there are plenty of opportunities to gain valuable certifications that can really boost your career. I’ve also received a huge amount of support from both my employer and my training provider. My employer is flexible when I need to adjust my schedule for client work and encourages me to pursue additional qualifications.
My training provider is always available to help with learning questions, deadlines, and even offers a campus when I need a focused study environment.
On top of that, the company creates a great atmosphere for personal and professional growth. I’ve developed a lot of confidence and technical ability, especially coming from a non‑technical background, and the environment has played a big role in that. IBM is a place where you can learn, grow, and do real, impactful work while being supported every step of the way.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?

I would advise that having a technical background isn’t required to join IBM. What it really helps is to be curious, and willing to learn. My own experience shows that you can come from a non‑technical background and still succeed, as long as you’re open to developing new skills and asking questions.
I’d recommend showing enthusiasm for technology and a genuine interest in how things work, even if you haven’t had much hands‑on experience yet. It also helps to highlight any examples where you’ve learned something new quickly or taken initiative, because IBM values people who are proactive and eager to grow - in fact, one of our core values is based around growth!
Being confident in your communication is important too, as the environment is very collaborative. And finally, don’t underestimate the value of passion and a positive attitude - IBM is very supportive of people who show motivation and a strong willingness to learn.
