Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role currently involves attending the training centre and working in the UKAEA training workshop. This has included units in the training centre (robotics, PLC, electrical installation, fluid power, hand fitting and CAD so far) and practical skills building including building a Buzz Wire Game (machining, electronics, pipe-bending and assembly).
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The program has been so diverse and well supported that I have been able to fully enjoy every moment. I have had other jobs prior to this and it is here that I feel heard and valued the most! I have thoroughly enjoyed learning new skills and being able to be hands on from the very beginning especially with milling, turning and electronics.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Within the FuSED workshop, the trainers have gone above and beyond by developing detailed technical drawings for us to follow in order to manufacture and build fully functioning projects. Our first project was a Buzz Wire game, incorporating electronics, pipe bending, milling, and turning. This was a challenging but rewarding introduction to multiple engineering disciplines. Our next project is the manufacture of a mini steam engine piston using both the lathe and milling machine, which I am eagerly looking forward to starting. These projects have transformed my understanding of engineering from theory into practical, tangible outcomes.
Mentorship has been central to my development throughout the apprenticeship. I have always had access to experienced engineers who are willing to share their knowledge, offer guidance, and support my professional growth. Regular feedback and check ins have helped me recognise my strengths, identify areas for improvement, and set clear, achievable goals for progression.
Before starting this apprenticeship, I worked in a completely different sector — education and childcare — with only a budding interest in engineering and very limited technical knowledge. Since beginning this journey, I have developed skills I never knew I could acquire, been offered opportunities I couldn’t have imagined, and explored areas of engineering that once felt overwhelming. The growth I have experienced is significant, and I have UKAEA and the incredible team around me to thank for that.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

I joined UK Atomic Energy Authority as a Level 3 Apprentice Mechanical Engineer Technician, and from my very first day my experience has exceeded all expectations. It was immediately clear that the apprenticeship programme is taken seriously and regarded as a long term investment in future engineers, rather than a short term role.
The quality of both training and support has been exceptional. In particular, the QuEST FuSED facility has been invaluable in developing practical skills well beyond those offered through the training centre alone. My apprenticeship has been carefully structured to ensure I build strong technical foundations while gaining meaningful, hands on workplace experience. I have been trusted with real tasks that allow me to directly apply my learning to genuine engineering applications, which has significantly improved both my confidence and capability.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

UK Atomic Energy Authority is also exceptionally supportive of apprentice wellbeing and individual needs. I have personally felt more supported here than at any previous organisation, not only academically but also during a significant personal loss. The care, flexibility, and understanding shown both before and after this difficult time ensured I was able to return to work feeling supported and valued. Time for off the job training is respected, with flexibility around college commitments and assessments, reinforcing the organisation’s belief that learning is a core part of the role.
I would like to specifically highlight the impact of the support provided within the QuEST FuSED workshop. He has generously given his time, knowledge, and expertise, helping to shape my understanding of workshop machinery and the critical importance of health and safety. He approaches every question with patience and encouragement and has a rare ability to make an initially intimidating workshop environment feel approachable, safe, and genuinely enjoyable. His guidance has helped me develop both technical competence and a healthy respect for risk, which is essential in engineering.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The training provider trainers and pastoral team have been endlessly supportive especially when I have had queries or needed help with a problem. There are certain members of the team who will regularly check in and make sure I am on track and give honest and supportive feedback.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification the training provider is supporting me with is helping me build a solid foundation of knowledge with introductions to new areas of Mechatronics I hadn't even thought of before. This alongside the workplace workshops is enhancing and extending my knowledge. I feel this is the best start to me career here that I could have hoped for.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes! I signed up to use the onsite gym, there are many clubs and sports available - thought I am not very sporty. I am more interested in the craft session lunchtimes and frequently get invited to apprentice social events. This builds such a good community feeling - I just wish I had more time in the day to get more involved.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to UK Atomic Energy Authority?
I would say to show the best parts of you, if you have unique or interesting hobbies or get involved in community events then make sure you show them. A piece of advice I was given when I was younger was to "grab every opportunity" and it has stayed with me - if you don't try to the best or your ability you will never know.
