As a degree apprentice at UKAEA, I attend university one day a week. This day gives me enough time to complete university content and the majority of my CW. For work I rotate placements every 6 months, this gives me experience into a wide range of disciplines including mechanical design, manufacturing, electrical installation, assembly, project management and managing work packages. A normal day changes depending my current placement. My current placement is the integrated engineering group where I manage work packages (procurement and documentation) while also installing and testing assemblies for specific applications around site.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I would highly recommend this apprenticeship to those who wish to have an ideal mix of practical and office based work type. Workhours are flexible and can be adjusted to suite your needs, annual leave is generous with the ability to carry over up to 10 days into the next year (privilege holiday excl from this). The work is rewarding and gives the most ideal environment for growth and development (if you apply yourself). The only reason I would give this a 4/5 is due to my longer travel commute, however that decision was overalled by the long-term benefits possible with this company. Some apprentices rent within the local vicinity.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Starting this apprenticeship, I had a basic knowledge of mechanical systems. Now I am efficient in 4 CAD/FEA software (CATIA, Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks and Ansys), I have a deep understanding of the industry mechanics and required processes. The company also fund role-related training courses such as programming, machining or project management. All of the skills I have developed throughout this apprenticeship are applicable to the wider industry.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

As with most apprenticeships, the communication between university and the company can be improved, I often feel like the degree is separate to the company work. At times it is difficult to juggle both university exams/coursework when workload is high. Saying this, I know methods of help are in place, extra help/time can be requested for university which will help balance your work load. I personally choose not to do this. The placement rotation is very well structured, allowing me to experience a wide range of disciplines. Specific placements can also be requested or extended based on how you would like to structure your career.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Support is always there when needed, regular checkups from both managers and early careers teams are in place and the contacts are well known if you ever need help.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The support from UKAEA is very helpful. Requesting extra time to complete exam revision or Coursework is common and specific placements are always happy to accommodate. In the past I have also requested mentoring from staff to help with a mathematics module. This was useful in giving me a head-start in university.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It is difficult to directly link a broad degree to a very specific industry. At times many of the modules do not cross-over with placements onsite. I think that this should be expected for any degree apprenticeship and not hinder your thoughts on starting one.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Many team sports around site however football is the most popular. I have also attended MMA, Thai boxing and boxing sessions, coached by a member of the sports societies. Networking is a key component of UKAEA, as such many "symposium's" are set up around site where divisions can communicate and share information/knowledge. There is also a free gym.

If you are looking for a role which gives you the freedom to learn and cover many disciplines, UKAEA is an ideal place. I have been surprised by my development within my three years and look forward to the future here.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to UK Atomic Energy Authority?
Show the interviewers how motivated you are, it is just as important than the grades you get. If you can show you are keen to learn and interested in engineering as a whole, you will be seen a strong contender.
