I am a Project Manager Apprentice at Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), supporting the delivery of transport and infrastructure projects that contribute to the Bee Network and wider organisational objectives.
My role combines developing professional project management capability with hands‑on involvement across the project life cycle, operating within TfGM’s governance frameworks and standards.Day‑to‑day responsibilities involves:
-Supporting the planning, delivery and monitoring of projects, including scope, schedule, cost, risk and quality.
-Assisting with the development and maintenance of key project documentation such as project plans, risk and issue registers, business cases, and progress reports.
-Coordinating with internal teams, external stakeholders and suppliers to support effective communication and delivery.
-Monitoring project performance against agreed baselines and highlighting risks, issues and variances to senior team members.
-Supporting governance and assurance activities, including preparing information for reviews and decision‑making.
-Contributing to stakeholder engagement, ensuring information is shared in a timely and appropriate format.
-Capturing lessons learned and supporting continuous improvement across project delivery processes.

The programme is well organised and clearly structured. It begins in September, aligning with the academic year, which supports a smooth transition into the role. A key strength of the programme is the six‑month rotation across different teams, allowing for a wide breadth of experience and exposure to TfGM’s operations across different project life‑cycle stages.
In addition, the programme provides strong support through a buddy system and the Mentor support network, offering access to people at different levels of experience and seniority. This ensures guidance and support are available when needed, helping to build confidence, capability, and understanding of the organisation.

I receive a high level of support from my employer. There are multiple channels available to provide feedback, ask questions, and share information, which makes it easy to raise issues or seek guidance when needed. Colleagues across the organisation are approachable and willing to help wherever possible, creating a supportive working environment. In addition, senior management have made themselves available to share their knowledge, provide clarity, and answer questions, which has been extremely valuable in supporting both my development and confidence in the role.

I received a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. My trainer worked part‑time, which at times caused slight delays in responses, however overall the support provided was effective and appropriate. When support was available, guidance was clear and helpful in supporting my progress through the programme.

My qualification has significantly helped me to perform better in my role. The training provider has given me a strong understanding of project management principles, which I am able to apply directly to my day‑to‑day work at TfGM. Learning structured approaches to areas such as risk management, stakeholder engagement, governance, and cost control has improved my confidence and effectiveness when supporting and managing projects. The qualification has helped me understand why processes are followed, not just how, which has strengthened my overall contribution to the project team.
