Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a Change Manager at Transport for Greater Manchester, my role exists to design, deliver and embed organisational change so that TfGM can achieve its strategic objectives while supporting colleagues through change in a structured, people‑centred way.
My role sits within People & Organisational Development.
Managing change and project activity against agreed plans, budgets and timescales
Monitoring progress and addressing risks and issues
Producing clear reporting and updates for stakeholders and governance
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy the Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship because it gives me the space and structure to step back from day‑to‑day delivery and think more strategically about leadership, organisations and my own impact as a leader. The programme challenges me to look beyond my immediate role and consider decisions through a wider organisational and system‑level lens, which directly supports my development as a senior leader.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
One of the biggest strengths of the apprenticeship is the ability to apply theory directly to real work at TfGM. The learning never feels abstract; instead, it helps me make sense of complex, real‑world challenges around change, leadership, culture and organisational performance. This practical application reinforces my learning and makes it immediately valuable, both to me and to the organisation.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship is exceptionally well structured, providing clarity and consistency throughout the learner journey. From induction, the programme sets clear expectations around learning, assessment, off‑the‑job requirements and support, which makes it easy to understand what is required and when. The modular design builds logically, with each element linking clearly to the Senior Leader Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours, ensuring learning feels progressive rather than fragmented. Regular touchpoints with an apprenticeship coach and access to a comprehensive programme handbook provide reassurance and ongoing guidance, while assessment methods are clearly signposted and aligned to real work‑based activity. The balance between academic teaching, practical application and structured reflection is particularly effective, enabling me to plan my time well and integrate learning alongside my role. Overall, the programme’s structure creates a strong sense of direction, reduces uncertainty, and supports sustained engagement and progress throughout the apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The support from TfGM throughout my apprenticeship has been excellent and clearly demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to colleague development. From the outset, there has been clear guidance from the People team, alongside strong encouragement and flexibility from my line manager, which has made balancing work and study manageable. TfGM provides access to dedicated contacts, clear processes and practical resources that remove uncertainty and ensure issues are resolved quickly. Regular check‑ins, openness to flexible working, and genuine interest in my progress have created a supportive environment where learning is valued rather than treated as an add‑on. This organisational support has been key to maintaining momentum, confidence and sustained engagement with the programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The support from Arden University has been consistently strong and well structured throughout the apprenticeship. From induction, there is clear guidance on programme expectations, systems and assessment requirements, which creates confidence from the outset. Having a dedicated apprenticeship coach as a single point of contact provides reassurance and continuity, with regular check‑ins that focus on progress, wellbeing and readiness for assessment. Academic tutors are approachable and provide timely, constructive feedback that supports both learning and application in the workplace. In addition, access to academic skills resources and clear communication channels means support is always accessible when needed, creating a positive and enabling learning experience.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
See comments above.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
No

My advice to anyone applying to TfGM would be to really understand the organisation’s values and purpose, and be ready to show how you align with them. TfGM looks for people who care about making a difference for Greater Manchester, not just technical capability. Take time to reflect on examples where you’ve demonstrated Deliver, Adapt and Care, and be prepared to talk about how you learn, respond to change and work collaboratively. It’s also worth researching TfGM’s wider priorities, such as inclusion, wellbeing and development, as these are genuinely important here.
