Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work in the highways department at TfGM so over the 5 years of my apprenticeship I will experience various different roles in different departments. My current placement is in the ITS team where I oversee the installation of communications to junctions and related traffic control systems, I manage a variety of assets which collect data on road use across Greater Manchester and I enjoy experimenting and evaluating new and emerging technologies for the Highways team.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme because there are a lot of opportunities available for me in different teams with different people. Everybody at TfGM is really kind and helps me feel welcomed and comfortable at work!

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have spent a lot of my time at TfGM developing new skills. Some skills are less technical and more corporate like the etiquette of writing emails but other skills are more technical like network monitoring.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme I am on is well organised and structured, we have a specific day for uni and the rest we are working with 2 days compulsory in the office. The structure is to change teams every 8 to 9 months to be able to gain as much experience, grab as many opportunities and meet as many people as possible.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
At work everyone is friendly and I have been blessed with great managers and colleagues. I'm constantly asking for help from different members of the team who will always help me without making me feel any guilt. Additionally, many colleagues will seek opportunities for me which I really appreciate and will help me gain the most out of my apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Since everything is crammed into one day, we get through the content quite quickly which can sometimes make things a bit overwhelming. However, the teachers are very approachable and will help at any opportunity they can.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel that at uni we learn invaluable skills that help us in our job side of the apprenticeship. However, since I am currently working in the highways department we haven't really covered much content that connects with the role. However, I am aware that in future years there will be modules that will more closely intertwine with my role in highways.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
At the moment, I haven't really been able to participate in any extra-curricular actives at work. However, I am aware that if I bring this up there will be more opportunities available to me and perhaps even opportunities that I don't know about. For now I will be joining the fundraising committee in my workplace.
