Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
As a software engineer apprentice I am part of the electric engineering team, working on exciting features to help our customers to transition to driving electric vehicles. Through the innovative solutions we build for our customers, we help to nurture and educate them on what life is like with an EV. I get stuck in with my team working on various front and backend tickets depending on the project. I take part in larger meetings called 'sprint reviews' which involve other stakeholders in the business, where we come together to discuss the goals that have been set up and what all the teams are working on so far.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I have really enjoyed my programme so far. The apprenticeship has been so hands-on which is exactly what I needed to get up to speed as quickly as I could. For me personally, I've come from a non-technical background and I can truly say that I've come such a long way from where I started at the beginning. The environment is so supportive and this is what is helping me thrive. Of course it is not easy balancing your day to day job with the apprenticeship which comes with its own modules and projects to complete, but I am well supported and am given regular time in the week to complete these tasks.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I have worked a lot on the back-end side of development and this has been immensely useful for my learning. At the start of the apprenticeship I took part in a 6 week bootcamp in the Java programming language and once this was complete, joining my team at work has helped me to strengthen this understanding even further.
In addition to this, I have also worked a lot with JavaScript/TypeScript and React. Before the apprenticeship I had only touched on these briefly through my own self study but working on front end tickets have helped me to understand from scratch the process developers go through to create user friendly interfaces for our customers. I have managed to see the relationship between the front and the back-end and how these link together and have found this really interesting.
I would say I have also gotten out of my comfort zone a lot more through business wide meetings where we plan ahead for certain projects.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
The apprenticeship provider is Multiverse and have really enjoyed the learning process with them through my company. The instructor is really really knowledgable and we have weekly sessions to cover various topics important for us to learn more about as it links to what we do in our day to day jobs.
Motability Operations support us well and if we have any issues we can always speak with them who really value our learning experience and they always make it a priority to address anything we feedback.
I think in terms of the apprenticeship workshops we have during the week I reckon it would be more time efficient to merge the two sessions into one day instead of two. This helps to reduce interruptions so that I can focus more on getting the valuable work experience.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
The employer supports me well and I know I can talk to my colleagues if I need any help. Everybody is really supportive and it makes me feel really comfortable.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
We have a brilliant apprenticeship Coach at Multiverse who holds regular team coaching sessions with us to make sure that we are working towards the apprenticeship standards that we need to pass. The instructor is top class and his sessions are really thorough and detailed. If i have any worries or questions I can reach out to either of them and they are more than happy to take time out to work with me.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
The qualification helps me to reflect deeply on key aspects of software engineering and this enables me to focus on a different area of my role each day that I can target for further improvement. In addition to this, the theoretical knowledge I have build up of Java at the beginning has been great as it helped me to make sense of what was happening when I looked at a codebase during the early days of joining the team.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
We have lots of social events throughout the year that anybody can turn up for. In addition to this we also have a number of different peer networks at the company for that togetherness and community spirit. I have been to a few talks organised by the gender network which I have found really engaging. We also collaborate with local schools and colleges so we have had the opportunity in the past to go out and speak to young people about possible career options which has been a great experience.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Motability Operations to a friend?

Yes

Why?

The company really cares about its staff. The facilities are great and the environment is one which is collaborative, inspiring and really friendly. I have learnt so much during my apprenticeship in just 8 months and that is down to the quality of staff that are here with many having years of experience in the multiple figures and I always want to try and take the opportunities to learn from them.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Motability Operations?

My advice would be to be yourself and try to show your passion and enthusiasm. Try to learn as much as you can about the company because there are a lot of different exciting things that we are working on. The company really values its customer so try to learn more about the kinds of customers we support and it always helps to put yourself in their shoes and think of things from their perspective. When you get invited to things like assessment days this will really help, having that background knowledge.
