Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I really love my job here at Specsavers. I am an Optical Assistant in the Diagnostics pathway with a level 3 certificate distinction. It involves the arrival and booking of customers, handling pre-screening machines, dispensing spectacles, doing spectacle collections, repairs and much more.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoyed the apprenticeship. At first I had been extremely nervous as it had been my first proper job role, but after befriending and working alongside my colleagues here in Specsavers, Hastings, I found myself growing confident quickly and growing a stronger backbone for myself.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt many skills. Big ones happen to be communication and teamwork skills as it had not been an area I had previous experience within. Not only my colleagues at work, but also my Learning Coaches, had helped me improve how to communicate with other people and how to better show empathy and understanding.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme had been very well structured. With learning happening during the two years of its duration, on the shop floor and through teams/I-Learn, alongside mock exams and reports to help me better prepare for the final exam and report.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

10/10 support, I owe it to my employer for building me into the person that I am today.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
100/10 support. My training provider/work coaches were my biggest support throughout the whole programme and I wouldn't have survived without them.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It helps me so significantly that I believe that if I had not done this apprenticeship I would've turned tail within the first week of the job I was just so nervous and unprepared coming into it.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes I have participated in the last two Christmas meals our employer has so kindly funded with us and I loved both occasions.

Why?
Where do I start? The people I work with are amazing, funny and super supportive. It is like one big family here where everyone fits into their piece of the puzzle. Nobody discriminates, and we protect each other and have each others backs no matter the situation. Like the famous slogan goes - Should've gone to Specsavers !
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Specsavers?
Make sure you research about the job role you are applying for, and even consider taking on an apprenticeship especially if you have no prior experience because it helps you learn soo much that you become adept in your role rather swiftly! Don't be scared to ask questions, everyone is so happy to help you that you will never feel like a burden. You are valued.
