Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Dealing with criminal matters in line with consumer protection law, apprenticeship coursework, metrology work, off-the-job learning and shadowing, tobacco and vapes work inc. routine inspections and raids, logging information on local and national databases in regards to consumer complaints, assisting with closure orders of non-compliant businesses, assisting with and starting to lead on some of my own court cases.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I thoroughly enjoy my programme, and look forward to my daily activities. I am proud of the work that I undertake and feel that I am making a real difference to society for the better. I am grateful for the outstanding opportunity that I have got and look forward to becoming a fully qualified TSO in the future.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed my conflict resolution skills, and general communication skills with members of the public. Public speaking has also improved my confidence and allowed me to bring that confidence into different areas of work and life. I have also developed my time management skills and my ability to plan ahead, managing my own time and allocating myself workload.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Very well structured and easy to navigate, everything apprenticeship-related is on BUD and uploading work and receiving feedback is easy and straightforward.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive regular and consistent support from my employer, regular 1-1s and we have clear and open communication about my workload, what I might be struggling with and where I need development.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Monthly 1-1s, tailored support and also quarterly reviews with my employment line manager and apprenticeship provider trainer to bring both aspects of the apprenticeship together and ensure I am receiving the best support possible.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification directly ties into my work and helps me develop essential skills and practices that will stay with me for the majority of my career. Our trainers and workshop leaders are ex-TSOs or have good experience in Trading Standards which means they can pass on good habits and information which can assist with my development.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are, but I have not explored this side of my employment as I tend to prefer to separate work and home life. There are many different activities and groups advertised on our intranet however, e.g. a gardening club.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend City of Wolverhampton Council to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Flexible working, great co-workers, positive and friendly working environment and atmosphere, parking provided on site, good quality work-critical equipment provided, good support and communication throughout the council.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to City of Wolverhampton Council?
Make sure you have a good commute journey pre-planned, as some roads can be very congested sometimes (at least coming from the Walsall area).
