Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Norfolk County Council to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Because it is a fair, diverse and inclusive place to work, where you can feel supported in your development and given genuine opportunities to carry out your role to the best of your ability. That support can take many forms: pastoral help through the council’s specialist services, a really helpful and knowledgeable IT department who assist with equipment or software needs, and an Apprenticeships team who are friendly, approachable and genuinely passionate about helping people grow.
Working at County Hall also gives you a strong sense of community. You feel it in the colleagues you work alongside every day and in the work you do for the people of Norfolk. Even if the public don’t always see the work happening behind the scenes, the people who work here care deeply about their local area. Many of us get out of bed each morning because we’re driven to be part of an organisation that wants to make a positive difference to the community we live in.
There’s a reason so many people spend their entire careers here. It isn’t due to a lack of ambition – far from it. You can achieve a great deal working in local government. It’s the sense of community that makes people stay: over the years, colleagues become close friends. Even when people move between departments, you bump into them while grabbing a coffee and end up having a catch‑up. It’s a large organisation, but what makes it different is that everything we do, across all service areas, is focused on improving life for the people living in the place we call home.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Norfolk County Council?
Put the people of Norfolk first, always think about those we provide a service to. Have integrity, be kind, inclusive and open minded towards working in a diverse community. Be eager to learn and develop, and if you are lucky enough to end up getting a job here, throw yourself into everything the council offers, make friends, come into the office, join the social club, come and buy a pint and do the quiz!
