Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an Apprentice, you will be in a cycle of going to college, being in your team and internally training. In college you will be learning and doing assignments for the BTEC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. You will learn about different teams available for you to join in your first few weeks. Once you've joined a team, you will be learning about what the team does and training to do the role on your own.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really am enjoying this apprenticeship! The people you meet and what you learn. It truly is one of the best apprenticeships in the country!

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt so much at NESO like how to fulfil my role in my team using different computer systems. I've also learnt a lot from the internal training as I didn't know much about the electricity system when I started but now I feel like I know a fair bit on how it works.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
There's a timetable we are given and, as I said before, we follow a set pattern of college, team and internal training. We knew what we were doing for the whole year in the first week of September.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
There's a lot of support at NESO as an apprentice, from the early careers team to the members of your team to even the Employee assistance programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
There's fast emails back and regular meetings with your assessor.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Some of the units in the college aren't as useful as others for the apprenticeship however the internal training makes up for it as the job is so unique.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There's loads of ERGs (Employee Resource Groups) to get involved with as well as social activities and sometimes team days. In the apprenticeship there's a week where you got to the Lake district and get the chance to team build with other members of the early careers community.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Energy System Operator (NESO)?
Be yourself and willing to learn. Make sure to ask questions and the best thing you can do is talk to people. You may not know the answer sometimes but if you know lots of people, the chances are you know someone who will know the answer.
