Industrial Placement - Power Systems Engineer Review

My role sits within Connections which is a forward-planning team at NESO, looking to connect future customers such as wind farms, often not for several years. This involves creating the technical requirements for these future customers. A day-to-day would be looking at a wide range of offers, whilst balancing responsibilites such as creating appropriate background information for models of the electricity system. Days can feel somewhat repetitive and a lot of time spent on Word, but it is an interesting, wide-reaching role that provides a broad view on the electricity system.

I have a lot of time left of my placement, but have certainly been given meaningful work. It is nice when you see your work relieve stress from your team and be used equally. There is naturally a large learning curve but absolutely chance to get stuck in and take responsibility.

I have developed several skills such as improved use of Excel, Word, Power BI and other specific software. I also feel that many soft skills, such as confidence in your own work, taking responsibility and leadership are encouraged at NESO. There is also many opportunities to develop skills on training courses, such as First Aid which I have completed whilst here.

I receieved plenty of support from my line manager and team which was encouraging when stepping into full time work. Additionally, there is lots of other early careers placements/grads/interns which is nice for asking questions, getting to know people etc. There was limited guidance from the Early Careers team after the first couple of weeks.

General atmosphere at NESO is really good, there are several sports teams and other 'Employee Resource Groups' which help. One element that is different to other workplaces is the hybrid nature / hot-desking aspect of work which can feel odd if you are not used to it. But I do believe if you put the energy in, the atmosphere will feel really welcoming and a company where you want to be your best.

It was hard to know what to expect ahead of starting as my experience is tied heavily to the team I was placed in, which made the initial learning a little bit harder and more out-of-the-blue. But I have really enjoyed it (so far), it has been a workplace that genuinely wants you to succeed and meaningful work. I have found working for sustainable, safe and non-profit goals really does change the focus to a more positive, beneficial environment. As a future career, I would see myself taking on different responsibilities in different teams, however as a placement experience, it was great to build up industry knowledge and confidence in the workplace.
