Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at National Energy System Operator (NESO)?

Overall, the grad scheme was very strong at NESO, with fair remuneration and a wide array of teams to gain experience in. A particular pro about NESO is being able to go on secondment in your second placement to be able to experience working for a different company in a role you might not have expected for yourself. This was a great development opportunity and not something found in many other grad schemes.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

Within my stream the main roles and responsibilities were around data analysis, engineering and coding on a day-to-day basis.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

4/5

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

5/5
It is likely you will only find better grad scheme pay with banks or contracting.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

3/5
One of the few down-sides to the grad scheme is that a lot of teams within NESO are technically behind, meaning it is difficult to be pushed unless you're in one of the few teams that are dedicated to data science.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

3/5
As above, it was rare to be pushed technically within NESO based teams, and found it was often my pre-existing skills I was bringing to the team.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

3/5
There is a good support system in place, with buddies and talent coordinators, but communication from Early Careers can be poor and often led to significant stress amongst the cohort.

How is your work-life balance?

5/5
There are few companies that promote a healthier work-life balance than NESO.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

5/5
The culture and values are clear and strong, many of the staff are friendly and eager to share knowledge. There is a healthy hybrid working scheme in place too.

How would you rate National Energy System Operator (NESO) initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

5/5
I have always found NESO to be very progressive and make strong efforts towards proper DEI.

How would you rate National Energy System Operator (NESO) CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

4/5

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend National Energy System Operator (NESO) to a friend?

Yes

Why?

It is a fantastic place to work with great remuneration, and many opportunities to explore if you aren't clear on your career path, or what interests you.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

4/5
As mentioned previously, a disappointing factor was not working in teams with stronger technical strength within NESO. Placements felt more like business intelligence roles where you could bring data science knowledge to the table.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to National Energy System Operator (NESO)?
