Overall Rating

The Overall Rating is the average of all the ratings given in each category. We take those individual ratings and combine them into one final score!

3.6/5 - Structure and Support

Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Standard software engineering role as part of an agile development team (completing tasks, providing updates at standup meetings, participating in sprint ceremonies)
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy the work side of the apprenticeship. I learn best through practical experience. Not the biggest fan of the uni side of things as I often find modules too simple or not relevant to my work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Developed hard skills e.g. programming and soft skills e.g. communication, problem solving, resilience throughout the apprenticeship.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Started well but the person in charge of IS apprentices left the company a few months in. After this, we lost some structure around placements, training opportunities and progression. It was very much up to individual line managers/teams rather than being a centralised program. There was also a lack of transparency/a plan about what would happen after our apprenticeships finished.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I can access support whenever I need it and am given ample time to complete my university assignments.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Lecturers and module leaders tend to be very approachable and accessible. Skills coaches are very helpful and actively help when needed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
As a software engineer- very little. First year I "learnt" basic syntax that I already knew (and needed to know to get the job in the first place). Second and Third years were more complex practices but using a language not used in my role at work. I find a lot of the time you learn more at work than at uni when it comes to your specific role.
For other skills important to the apprenticeship, the training provider is useful. Holistic professional skills like project management are taught at uni but are not something I normally do in my role. I have found these useful for completing solo workplace projects.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
We run a weekly five-a-side football and put on yearly inter-departmental charity tournaments. There are also lots of social opportunities to get involved in, but they're optional and up to individuals to get involved.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Transport for Greater Manchester to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Although it can be frustrating at times to deal with public-sector red tape and organisational hierarchy when working in IT, TfGM is a good place to work with excellent benefits and wonderful people.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for Greater Manchester?
It's not just about what you know already, but your attitude and work ethic. Those who are willing to put the effort in to develop are well-supported at TfGM.
