Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I was a structures intern over the summer, for 8 weeks, and I got a really good taste of what it's like to be on the design side of engineering. I had the opportunity to attend progress meetings and observe how teams collaborated. Additionally, I was assigned my own set of tasks, which I worked on, and I was encouraged to ask questions at all times. I gained exposure to and used software such as Robot, Tedd, and Grasshopper, among others.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I think I was given the right level of responsibility based on my previous experience (I had never done any work in design). Because I was encouraged to ask questions, I made good progress with the tasks I was given, and it was encouraging to see my work actually be used and contribute to the progress of the project.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I learnt how to use structural design software, such as Robot and Tedds, and expanded my knowledge of visual coding software, including Grasshopper. I also learnt how different teams (across multiple disciplines) work together to deliver larger, more complex projects; I learnt about the process of working with a client and other subcontractors.
The placement also broadened my knowledge of structures (Eurocodes, design checks, etc.), and I look forward to applying this new knowledge at university.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I've received so much support from different levels. I found it useful that I could go to multiple people, and there were always people in the office who were willing to answer my questions and help me out when I was stuck.
Everyone I asked was happy to go into more depth and take time to explain concepts/processes in more detail.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It was great; everyone was very welcoming, and it was nice to see that there were always a lot of people in the office.
I joined the YEF (Young Employees Forum), which had socials and was a great way to meet people who were similar in age to me.
Although I never worked at home, I knew that it was always an option if I had to, so I really appreciate how BH offer flexible working hours.
