Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Structural engineer summer placement - got to carry out various different tasks on different active projects within the company. Looking at drawings, carrying out calculations, using computer software, attended one or two site visits.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a good amount of responsibility and believe that the work I carried out was meaningful and will hopefully be used as part of something further down the line.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Developed skills -- working as part of a team and communication, navigating professional relationships
Developing technical skills - learning different computer software, internal systems and analysis programmes that will be useful when I go back to university.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Lots of support - everyone was very welcoming and happy to help out with any questions or uncertainty I had. The team had weekly resource meeting to check up on everyone and make sure you had work to do and weren't struggling with it. My line manager was checking in with me several times a week to make sure I was doing okay ( in work and personally)

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Great - everyone was very welcoming and inclusive. There were plenty of approachable people to speak to in the office and it was always a friendly atmosphere. There was various social events for after work that I was able to attend.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I enjoyed my placement a lot. I was always happy to come in to work everyday, it never felt like a chore as there was always something interesting going on.

What advice would you give to others applying to Buro Happold

From my experience, I would definitely recommend BH for a summer internship. Not only is it a great experience for career prospects and gaining engineering experience in a real job, it is a great place to meet people, learn from them and develop personally.
In terms of advice, I would recommend being yourself, being open minded and saying yes to any opportunity that may come your way.
