Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a Software Development Engineering Intern, my day-to-day responsibilities closely mirror those of a full-time software engineer, giving me valuable exposure to professional development workflows. Each morning begins with a stand-up meeting where the team shares updates on what they worked on previously and what they plan to tackle next. This helps maintain alignment and fosters collaboration.
The bulk of my day is spent programming, whether that’s implementing new features, fixing bugs, or reviewing code. I also participate in occasional meetings, such as sprint planning, retrospectives, or technical discussions, which provide insight into broader project goals and team dynamics. Overall, the role has offered a well-rounded experience of working in a modern software engineering environment.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a significant amount of responsibility during my internship. I joined a newly formed team and was tasked with building a user interface using React and TypeScript for an evolving internal API. I had a high level of ownership over the project, from initial design decisions to implementation, and the tool I developed is something the team will continue to use and build upon.
To support my frontend work and better understand the system, I also picked up several tickets on the backend and API. This helped me explore the codebase more deeply and allowed me to unblock parts of the frontend that depended on backend functionality. It was a great way to gain full-stack experience and contribute meaningfully across different layers of the application.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, I’ve developed both new and existing skills during my internship. I already had experience with React and TypeScript, and this internship gave me the opportunity to build on that foundation by applying those skills in a professional setting, working on a real product with production-level code and team collaboration.
On the backend, I had a basic understanding of Spring, and during the internship I was able to deepen that knowledge while working with Kotlin. Although most of my work was focused on the frontend, I picked up a few backend and API-related tickets to support my project and unblock future frontend development. This helped me explore the codebase more thoroughly and gain a better understanding of how the system works end-to-end.

I received a great deal of support and guidance throughout my internship. The team I worked with was always keen to help and very approachable whenever I had questions or needed clarification. Even though the working model was hybrid, there were almost always people in the office, which made it easy to have quick conversations or get feedback in person.
Everyone was consistently happy to help, whether it was technical guidance, code reviews, or just general advice. This supportive environment made it much easier to learn, grow, and feel confident in contributing to the team.
