Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at British Airways?
Rewarding, I have been well supported so far, given ample development opportunities, and managers who want the best for said development. The culture is friendly an supportive, with everyone being open to help and share their knowledge.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
The main responsibilities range from answering ad-hoc questions relating to many areas in commercial (placement dependent), utilising SQL and Excel to generate insight and drive decision making. Report creation and management through Tableau and Power Bi is at the center of most of the longer term projects, as well as curating SQL datasets for use in said reporting. I enjoyed the technical coding aspects, as well as being able to create innovative data visualisations that create actionable insight.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
4/5
While developing and upskilling at the beginning of the role your contributions are understandably limited. However, upon reaching the required level of technical skills and business understanding you are quickly given meaningful and impactful projects, being treated not as a graduate, but as a fully fledged team member capable of providing unique insight and reliable results.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
4/5
The payrate is competitive from the outset, and rises quickly at pre-defined intervals during the 2 year scheme. There is a bonus scheme (company performance triggered). Most excitingly you receive considerable discounts on travel in the form of standby arrangements as well as discounted commercial fares, making it the ideal choice for an avid traveler - and one of many reasons many graduates stay on after the scheme.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
The role is no different in essence to the future career you would have if staying at British Airways on completion of the Graduate Scheme. You are taught both technical and 'soft' skills through experience and given ample opportunity to use what is taught in presentations, project management, workflow management, communication and more.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
4/5
The rate of skill development is high during the entire scheme, though is especially at the start of each of the 3 placements. Opportunities are there if you spend the time seeking them out, and resources are plentiful to further development - though to what extent you are given time to develop personally is down to your manager.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
4/5
HR support during onboarding was good, with regular touchpoints throughout the process. We were allocated a buddy, which was very useful in answering the more informal questions. Line managers are generally very involved in supporting and assisting, and I personally felt well supported, with a well managed workload.
How is your work-life balance?
4/5
There is a standard expectation of 37.5 hours per week, and very rarely is there expectation to work more than this. the 2 mandatory days in office are a good balance between WFH and time with colleagues. The location of the office (Near Heathrow Airport) can lead to longer commutes if locating towards more central London, but most live in West London avoiding this problem.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
I have always felt very welcomed and listened to during my time. BA prides itself on valuing every voice and every person, and always scores highly in this area on colleague surveys. Remote working policy is varied, but generally 2/3 days in the office, with the rest WFH. This is somewhat flexible around your personal commitments (such as doctors appointments etc.)
How would you rate British Airways initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
There are numerous initiatives in this space. Several colleague networks (BeME, Flying Proud, WINGs, etc.) exist, enabling access to support, resources, and are given a voice in how BA devises its strategy around equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility. There is a general initiative to be a 'British Original', celebrating every persons uniqueness, and what makes them them. There are also regular forums, such as the 'RM Womens forum' and others to champion equality.
How would you rate British Airways CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
Being an airline makes CSR all the more important, and BA puts considerable effort into this area. besides the sustainability driven targets operationally, there are regular charity events such as bake sales, volunteering work in the local community and more, to raise money for a number of causes. 'Flying Start' partnering with comic relief is a program encouraging colleagues to curate and engage in initiatives to raise money for Comic Relief causes. Since 2010 BA colleagues have raised £30 million for the charity.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend British Airways to a friend?
Yes
Why?
In brief, I have found BA to be supportive, welcoming, and rewarding. The people make it a truly enjoyable place to work, and the development opportunities equip you with all the skills required for future success.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
5/5
The recruitment process was representative of the role itself.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to British Airways?
Do your research on British Airways, and know the specifics. But also make sure to sell yourself as a unique individual, make your application (and yourself) stand out, don't just rely on AI to write a general and boring application.
