Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
During my placement at IBM Technology Expert Labs, I worked within the IT Automation team as part of Global Software Sales. My role involved supporting clients in adopting IBM’s hybrid cloud and AI solutions, with a strong focus on integration technologies and automation. On a day-to-day basis, I assisted with technical solutioning, prepared client-facing materials, and collaborated with senior architects on proof of concepts. I also gained hands-on experience with tools such as Red Hat OpenShift, Ansible, Instana, and IBM App Connect, as well as helping with Box to OneDrive migration analysis and planning. Alongside technical work, I contributed to client engagements for major accounts, prepared sales presentations, and supported events such as IBM Technology Expert Labs briefings
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a high level of responsibility throughout my placement. I worked directly with clients on live projects, contributed to technical proofs of concept, and had the opportunity to represent IBM in both internal and external discussions. I was trusted to deliver independent pieces of work, such as migration assessments and automation playbooks, while also collaborating on larger initiatives like the development of an operator for IBM App Connect. I was encouraged to take ownership of tasks, manage my own time, and bring forward new ideas, which helped me develop both my technical expertise and my confidence in professional environments.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
During my placement I was able to significantly develop both my technical and professional skill set. On the technical side, I gained hands-on experience with Red Hat OpenShift, Ansible, and IBM Instana, as well as developing automation playbooks and working with containerised environments. I also deepened my knowledge of hybrid cloud and integration technologies, particularly through projects involving IBM App Connect and large-scale migration planning
Alongside this, I improved my communication and presentation skills by contributing to client-facing workshops, preparing sales materials, and supporting events. I also developed project management and collaboration skills through working with senior architects and directly engaging with clients. Overall, the placement gave me a well-rounded mix of technical expertise and professional growth that I can take forward into my future career.
