Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I was put in a people partnering team, which boiled down to helping other arms of the business be functional and fit within Lloyd's organisational vision. I sat in on my team meetings, and did a lot of work on independent research and team projects. The internship kind of had two main components: work for your team, and work for the broader internship (ie group projects)
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Not particularly - I was involved in setting things up for the women's network, but I wasn't given many tasks by my team even when I asked. I could've been more persistent, however, and anecdotally people in other teams seemed to be given more impactful work. I think my team weren't sure what they could give me.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Not much - I couldn't have had a nicer team, but I was often left on my own during the internship. It felt like I was either forgotten or my team weren't sure how to use me. When I started, my team were very helpful explaining things to me and how Lloyds works, but beyond that I didn't receive much support on specific skills or what I was doing. However, this was pretty unusual - most interns received quite a bit more support from their managers, and another of the HR interns was pretty much micromanaged by their boss.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Overall, extremely welcoming and positive. Everyone I spoke to was very friendly and nice, and overall very inclusive. I wouldn't say Lloyds overall is particularly diverse - the vast majority of colleagues I encountered were white. However, the company seemed very keen to become more representative of society, and wasn't outwardly prejudiced.
In the longer term, I'm not quite sure what direction Lloyds is going culture-wise. On the surface at the moment things are meant to be very people-orientated, but it seems as part of broader company transformation the senior leadership want the company to become more dynamic and growth-orientated. There was a bit of a demographic split between most employees having been at Lloyds for 10-20+ years and being very committed to Lloyds' traditional image of being slow but relaible, and colleagues who'd only been brought in a couple of years ago who were often had a slightly more capitalistic mindset. HR is currently very friendly (you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer bunch of people), but it wouldn't surprise me if the company is much more cold and cut-throat by 2030.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Quite a lot - my team were lovely, the facilities were great, and I was able to learn lots of interesting things about Lloyds as an organisation, HR, etc. It might've been nice to be a bit more supported by my manager, but I definitely could've been more proactive in terms of getting work and getting the most out of the internship. If you're interested in HR/corporate environments/banking, I'd definitely recommend the Lloyds internships.
