Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
To assist project engineers with tasks to ensure projects are to the required quality and safety standards and adhere to project timescales. I assist the Project Engineering Managers within managing engineering packages of work and tracking deliverables. I manage client responses to technical queries and requests for information, and discuss with the Contract Engineering Manager whether the response is a change of scope and if it will delay our program or have a cost implication to the project.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy my program and the balance between attending University and working. I like that I still get the 'University experience' as I attend university for six one-week blocks per year. During this time, I stay in accommodation and get to live the University life and socialise with other apprentices. I find my program both challenging and rewarding. I enjoy that I am consistently challenging myself, learning new skills and getting involved in the office.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Skills I have learned so far during my apprenticeship include thinking independently and double-checking information to ensure its accuracy. I have developed my confidence and social skills by being in a corporate environment and participating in meetings with both colleagues and clients. I have improved my technical knowledge of the railway and signalling through training courses. Additionally, I have developed my Excel skills by creating numerous spreadsheets to track project deliverables.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
My program with LSBU is mostly organised. We are always informed well in advance about course dates, the modules we will be completing, who will be teaching them, and when and how to complete coursework. The program is well-structured as we complete two modules per semester, studying one in the morning and one in the afternoon. We complete four pieces of coursework per semester and feedback is always available on request. Additionally, the program is well-organised as we use 'APTEM' to record all apprenticeship related activities, such as off-the-job learning hours and reviews between the University and our employers.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I am very well supported by my employer. In my work place, I have my line manager and a mentor for support. My colleagues are very supportive and are always willing to involve me and show me new things. My line manager is very supportive in letting me explore what the business has to offer, and we have monthly meetings to discuss my progress. I receive great support from my apprenticeship supervisor, we have a few meetings a year to catch up on how I am doing and what support I may need. Any issues I have are always sorted quickly and I am always supported with any help I may need.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I receive a decent amount of support from my training provider. My lecturers are always willing to support me and provide feedback to questions promptly. I have three meetings per year with my skills coach and employer to discuss progress and issues. I know that if I need support, my University would support me.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I think the qualification provided through my training provider helps me perform better in my role because it gives me more in-depth knowledge about my role and the railway industry. It helps me work at the required level, understand technical aspects of the railway and join in with technical conversations and meetings.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
We are encouraged to join associations like the Association of Apprentices and Young Rail Professionals, which offer networking events and social activities. We have some team social activities at work and networks such as embRACE. There are also opportunities for Entry Level Talent meet-ups throughout the year, such as Summer Socials. However, there could be more opportunities for sports teams and events.
