Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Performing diagnostic checks on patients before they go in to see the optometrist. Doing contact lens teaching. Advising frame and lens choices for patients after their sight test. Reception duties for example, checking in patients, time management, taking payments and communicating with customers.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoyed learning about the human eye and how it performs, along with all the different types of correction and conditions of the eye. I enjoyed learning whilst working.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Communication and confidence has certainly improved. I have learnt problem solving and goal- setting. I have learnt to use diagnostic equipment. My speaking and explaining skills has improved. Knowledge on optical anatomy and physiology, as well as knowledge on visual corrections. Mathematical skills have improved.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Very well organised, the apprenticeship coaches are extremely helpful when it comes to planning, structure and teaching.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Being the first apprentice in my store meant the support from the employer was not at its fullest. However, over time and with other apprentices, doing the same level 3 as myself, support has definitely improved.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

A lot of support from the apprenticeship coaches; they tell you of all the different ways to develop my career and give me advice on how to get there.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I have the understanding and knowledge needed to advise and discuss with patients to help them know more about their eye health and/ or conditions.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
