Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am a Library and Information Assistant, Central Services Assistant, and Business Administrator Apprentice at Norfolk Library and Information Service. As I work in two roles in addition to my apprenticeship, my day-to-day varies widely but most days involve serving library customers and assisting with any enquires they may have either in person or via email or telephone. I also deal with other organisations and NCC departments on a daily basis.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I am enjoying doing my apprenticeship, gaining valuable skills such as project management which would otherwise be hard to obtain in my role. It is fun learning new things and developing new skills.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Since starting my apprenticeship, I have learnt how to analyse data, write reports, and a variety of business terminology. It has been valuable learning about my organisation in greater depth, covering relevant regulations and policies, as well as the structure of the organisation, as well as looking at my place and role as part of the organisation.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
My tutor is excellent and is always prepared for our meetings. They keep all files organised and it is easy to find a document when needed. However, on the shared apprenticeship space on Microsoft Sharepoint, the resources are often disorganised, outdated and difficult to find at times. This sometimes makes it harder to complete assignments.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My manager has been supportive of my apprenticeship, giving me opportunities to develop my skills and shadow other departments.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The apprenticeship team regularly contact me to check how my apprenticeship is going. My tutor schedules regular 1:1s to discuss my progress and set targets.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My apprenticeship has given me new skills such as coaching, which has allowed me to pass skills onto my team. I have also learnt project management skills which will be useful when projects arise in my team as I will have knowledge to assist.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
There are some network groups, such as the LGBTQ+ Employee Network, that organise social activities. However, these are often at another site and during working hours so I've been unable to attend any events as of yet. But they do sometimes organise events outside of work. There are no other extra-curricular activities or groups that I am aware of at NCC.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Norfolk County Council to a friend?
Yes
Why?
NCC is a good place to work and has core values that I agree with. The apprenticeship team has been very supportive and it was easy to start my apprenticeship. One of my roles also allows for flexible working which is useful for when life gets busy.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Norfolk County Council?
I would consider doing the shorter 1 year apprenticeship if you are a quick learner and eager to complete assignments like me. I have found that I am getting through the workload quicker than anticipated but still have loads of OTJ hours to complete.
