Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role as a project management degree apprentice involves supporting project professionals with their projects. It involves having meetings with stakeholders, looking at schedules and risk management. It is feeding information into stakeholders and making sure correct people receive the information and helping people in other roles complete their job.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy my programme completely, the amount of support that is provided from the business makes it such an enjoyable experience. Having people within the business so open to apprentices and willingly answering questions is such an enjoyable experience to have when working on a programme, it provides a sense that you can make mistakes and it will be ok.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt an abundance of skills such as scheduling skills, how to read and amend existing schedules, how to spot gaps that could be closed up in schedules and how to identify risks within schedules and what to do to mitigate these risks and when to escalate it. I have developed my digital skills and developed my communication skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It is well organised and structured with constant in person training which is well communicated across alongside online training which we are told about by our skills coaches and the lead of project management apprentices. University modules are well structured and planned throughout the year with us being able to see what our next module is going to cover prior to starting it.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
We have reviews with our skills coaches that not only cover our professional and personal development but also a check in on how we are doing personally and it gives us the opportunity to discuss any personal problems. We are not only constantly supported within the professional development aspect of the apprenticeship but also the personal side of things with people to talk to being signposted consistently for issues within work or within our personal life. There are always opportunities to discuss with our PM lead if we feel as though our placement is not helping us develop and we aren't ignored about things like that.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
With only starting last year it is hard to fully say about the support we receive. They are mostly good with their support with responding to emails however, 1 to 1s within the university were not sign posted when we first began and they offered them out for the first time in our second to last module. The 1 to 1 was good and gave a lot of support when needing a clarification but they should have signposted and offered out this opportunity earlier. Feedback from assignments are always given on time and mostly have good feedback attached to help us improve.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It is really helpful as it runs through things we may not see in our current placement such as quality processes. Also it helps me personally solidify some of my knowledge which I get from my placement and allows me to feel more confident when completing tasks in my placement or making suggestions as I know I am right in what I am saying. It also gives us a more in depth look which allows us to understand concepts better as sometimes teams may not have the time to give that in depth explanation.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are a few extra-curricular activities that I have heard about that is done in my work. The most popular one among apprentices is the STEM Ambassador scheme.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is an incredibly good company to work for there is support to develop your own professional skills from everywhere. Within the business even people at a very high level will take time out of their day to help you understand concepts better. There is a very positive environment within the BAE offices which fosters a good work environment that allows you to get more work done at a higher quality.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Not be worried or scared about the interview process, every person doing the interviews is so kind, they understand that nerves come along with an interview and are extremely understanding about that. My interview was not as scary as I thought so spend the time you would spend on worrying on preparing for it instead. They are always open to you asking questions within the interview.
