Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work in financial accounts, which means on a day-to-day basis I complete balance sheet recs, asset life testing and help prepare stats. At month end I have the opportunity to post journals, business partner with other finance teams and prepare and present the P&L in our close meetings.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy the programme. I've had lots of opportunities to learn and develop my skills and have also had opportunities to meet lots of people and further relationships with other people who are part of the program. There is a really good early careers community.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have improved my practical skills such as Excel. I've also had the chance to improve my soft skills like communication through presenting in meetings, and my team-work skills through business partnering with other teams. My role has given me responsibility for certain projects to help with process improvement and efficiencies.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The four-week induction was very well organised, we were given introductory sessions on different finance functions in the company to introduce us to the structure of the business. We also had lots of training to develop basic skills to prepare us for our roles. We also have quarterly catch ups with our year reps to discuss any issues, and can talk to any of the early careers team if we have any issues at work or with our training provider.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
We get offered a good amount of support from the early careers team. Each year group has a year rep who we can contact if we have any issues, and we also have quarterly catch ups with them. If there are any issues with our training provider, our employer doesn't hesitate to get involved to try to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The training provider offers basic support in terms of practise questions and lecture videos. However, in terms of communication they are lacking. If we need help when struggling with an exam it takes them months to provide extra support, and we even have to chase them for details such as team links for our review calls.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification has definitely helped me in my role. I started my qualification from the certificate level exams, which means I had a solid framework understanding of basic principles. My role is quite technical, which means having good background knowledge has helped reinforce my understanding of certain parts of my job.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are lots of extra-curricular activities offered at work. A big one is getting involved in Red Nose Day, where you can be as involved as you want. There's the opportunity to be a Red Nose Day Champion (setting up fundraising events), or to participate in fundraising such as sports tournaments and competitions. A lot of finance functions also have social committee teams, who organise social activities outside of work, such as bowling, potter painting and darts.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend TJX Europe to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The people are a really big part of TJX's culture, and this has definitely made a difference to my experience. Everyone is friendly and willing to help, and there is a really nice Early Careers community. The grad scheme is also a great chance to work out what areas of finance interest you, as there is the opportunity to experience three different finance functions over the three years. Everyone is really invested in helping you grow and be your best self.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to TJX Europe?
I'd definitely recommend understanding the TJX model. It is a really interesting model, and because it is unlike other business models it is really important to have a good understanding of it. Remember that not everything is about practical work experience as your extra curriculars, and experiences can also make you a good candidate!
