Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

During the year I rotated between 3 teams in the marketing department, giving me a broad overview of the function. Day-to-day tasks included writing creative briefs, data interpretation, content creation for internal comms channels, ad hoc research projects, store walks, creative reviews and feedback and assisting the management of corporate events.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

During my placement I was given lots of responsibility, owning and managing briefs for smaller-scale projects and assisting the execution of larger-scales ones, but also offered lots of support throughout the year.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have built on many skills I had picked up at university for example time management, but also been able to develop lots of new skills that are hard to teach in a classroom i.e. stakeholder management, project management and commercial awareness.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received lots of support throughout the whole year. We had both a placement mentor and a 'buddy' who we could talk to for any advice, plus line managers for more team-specific queries.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I have really enjoyed my placement year and feel more confident heading into final year with all the new experiences skills that I have been able to develop. It is unfortunate that they don't offer a graduate scheme in marketing.

It is a very welcoming and exciting business with a unique off-price model. Being open to challenges and learning new skills is essential, especially when working with such a diverse range of teams whose functions may be unfamiliar. These experiences offer valuable opportunities to learn more about the business and the industry.
