Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am an optical assistant and spend my time at work either assisting in the selection of glasses, processing dispenses for customers, doing the fitting and adjustments when they come to collect as well as problem solving with people who are having issues with their glasses.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have been really enjoying the programme so far as I have been learning a lot of new skills and have been yearning to learn something new for years. Not only that, but it has drastically improved my maths skills which is a subject that I always loved.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

During the programme, I have learnt a lot that can help me do my job to a higher standard and it has given me a much better understanding of optics.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Seeing as it's the first apprenticeship for this particular course, there are a few things that need ironing out but overall it has been very good. The tutors and resources available have been very good as I feel I have a good understanding of the course material so that can only mean they are doing well.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of support from my employer as they will regularly be checking up on me to see how I am getting on with the work and will do their best to aid me with it as well. They supply me with the off the job time which is a great as it means I don't feel like my whole life outside work is spent trying to catch up.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The training providers provide a lot of support in every aspect, they have really helped me build my confidence and whenever we have an issue or need to ask a question they will send me over a message or give me a call to see what they can do.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

To begin with it didn't feel like it was helping much but that was just because we were building on the theory of optics but now that we are getting into it, it feels like I am more confident in the role and have a much better understanding of the products we sell and the difference between them.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Occasionally there will be celebratory events for the team where we all may go bowling or darts or just have a big meal at a restaurant but it is dependant on events at the store.

Why?
They have been great at pushing me to reach my potential and I see them doing it with my colleagues too. It is a very interesting job with plenty to learn about and many opportunities to progress.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Specsavers?
Be prepared for a very customer facing role and being a people person is a big help in the role
