Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Trading Standards work to ensure a fair, safe and legal marketplace. On a day-to-day basis we provide support to businesses and safeguard communities, tackling the most serious illegal trading. This can involve visiting businesses, carrying out operations, and dealing with intelligence from the public.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
To a huge extent; it is a hugely varied role and every day is different. I love being able to help in the community and make an active difference to protecting Norfolk's consumers.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt a lot about the legislation that we enforce and the powers we have. I have also learned about our policies and procedures, including how to carry out an investigation.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It is well organised between our provider (CSA) and our employer, Norfolk County Council. We receive a large amount of structured training and have regular 1:1s with our line manager and apprenticeship coach.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
LOTS - they are incredibly approachable and flexible, and have given me a huge amount of support during some personal difficulties I experienced during my first year.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
A good amount - we have a coach who we can contact if we have questions, but we have asked for mark schemes/model answers to exam questions on a few occasions which hasn't been forthcoming.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Very well - our assignments mostly relate very strongly to our day-to-day role, and encourage us to think about the best way to carry out our duties.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
We have various wellbeing events through our department's wellbeing champions. I'm not sure about wider activities within the council.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Norfolk County Council to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They are a very supportive employer who give you the opportunities you need to succeed. I feel like they are invested in helping me to succeed, but also care about my wellbeing at the same time.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Norfolk County Council?
Be yourself; you are valued for who you are.
