Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I work in Safety, Health and Environments (SHE). Doing 6 month placements in different areas/ teams on site (e.g. operational area, environment team, occupational health team). Day to day varies based on placement. I may be assisting to investigate accidents, noise monitoring, assisting with internal or external audits, reviewing permits, assisting to advise management on SHE issues, interacting with operatives to gain knowledge on their task.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy having both desk based tasks and tasks that take me around site. I am able to meet people from many different departments and see many areas of site. I have enjoyed moving around the teams as this have given me well rounded knowledge of SHE issues, and allowed me to build relationships within different team/ departments

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt how to risk assess, how to present to large audiences, human factors that contribute to accidents, how to plan for emergencies, how to identify and control hazards, how to carry out a campaign, advising on SHE policies and procedures, how to recognise when the activity will benefit from the expertise of another department.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

I was given which placements I would be attending at the beginning therefore this was already organised. However, with management in some areas changing sometimes the new manager would be unaware they were getting an apprentice, till contacted by the apprentice. This would be quickly controlled. Everything else has been well organised and structured with regular catch ups and college days etc, with changes made where needed.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have regular catch ups with my placements manager, monthly catch ups with my line manager where i can express any issues personally or with my placement. I also have a meeting every 3 months with a skills coach from early careers to discuss my progress, any blockers i may have, and if i need any support. With any personal issues you can access the employee assistance programme (provides confidential in the moment support 25/7)

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My training provider provides monthly workshops where we are then given assignments to complete relating to the workshop. My tutor is contactable using onefile which I have always experienced fast replies. I have a catch up with my tutor every 3 months to communicate any issues.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

When working towards my qualification, i definitely noticed this linked with a lot of activities I carry out at my workplace, and it provided clarity on why things are done certain ways. It has also provided me with relevant information such as knowledge on legislation that I can now look back on. All of my college work links directly (but more in depth) to the NEBOSH units. They also provide evidence for the knowledge, skills, and behaviours expected of me by the business.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

You can apply to be a STEM ambassador where you will apply to help with activities such as giving a presentation at a junior school. There is networking you can apply to where you will be randomly paired with a colleague from any BAE company, and given a meeting to network. There are social events organised throughout the year such as bowling
